"Where's MacGyver? He was supposed to be here hours ago."

"We have news that he was kidnapped by some environmental extremests and is being held hostage in a warehouse somewhere."

"Kidnapped! Who is responsible?"

"We don't know, sir. One of our field agents followed them and discovered where he was being held. He couldn't get in to rescue him. All he could report was that the warehouse appeared to contain a vast supply of duct-tape, paper clips, and Swiss Army Knives.... why are you laughing, sir? Shouldn't we try to rescue him?"

"Are you kidding? He's probably already at home!"

MacGyver sat down on his couch slowly, then let himself fall over so that his aching head rested on a cushion.

He still couldn't believe that Deborah... or whatever her name really was... had tried to kill him. Her attractiveness and their apparent compatability had only been tools that she had tried to use to ruin him. And he had fallen for it. Fallen for her. That stung more than the burns on his face.

There was a scent on the pillow... her perfume. Mac squeezed his eyes shut and let out a sigh.

... And reached for his guitar.

“MacGyver! What are you doing with my computer?”

“Hey, Pete! I was just having a little problem on the Internet. Do you have any idea how many websites there are devoted to me? It’s crazy!” Mac turns the monitor so that his friend can get a better look. “See? This one is the best. I didn’t even realize that I was Online!”

Pete shook his head slowly, smiling indulgently at his friend’s modesty. “Couldn’t have happened to a better man, Mac. So, what’s the problem?”

“There’s something wrong here… I can’t use my own name! Somebody else is already me!”

Ambush

Mac looked up in surprise; he’s been so intent on freeing Penny that when Murdoc stepped out on to the verandah, he seemed to appear from out of nowhere.

Dressed in black, Murdoc wore a cold smile and a colt 45. He smoothly drew his gun and aimed from the hip.

The barrel of the gun looked big as a cannon. Mac wanted to run but there was nowhere to run to…

Something hit him hard in the chest, and then he was tumbling backward into the air. He heard Penny scream before the frost-coated earth rushed up at him.

Lucky Shot

Pete’s own heart nearly stopped as he ran up to the side of his friend, where he lay sprawled upon the ground. MacGyver had fallen from the balcony above the hotel, and he wasn’t moving. A thin string of smoke rose from an ugly hole over Mac’s heart, but no breath of life steamed from his lips. Beside him, Jack removed his hat and hung his head sadly.

Then suddenly Mac coughed and groaned aloud. Fumbling, he drew out of his shirt pocket a badly dented knife, the bullet-hole not quite defacing the small cross carved on the wooden handle.

You Don’t Know Murdoc

The first time I ever faced this man, he tried to have me killed. What was it about that one incident that has set him with such determination to see me dead? After we escaped from the bazookas (sorry again about your cab, Jack old buddy) he seemed to forget about his games with Pete and the DXS, and turned his attention to little ol’ me… how is that fair?

And just what does a guy have to do to kill Murdoc? I’ve never really wanted his blood on my hands… but he never gives up. And he never dies!

Why…?”

“I need the crystal.”

He reluctantly handed over his watch. “Alright …here! But…? You do know that’s a bomb over there?”

MacGyver ignored his ever-so-helpful observer. He knew it was a bomb. It was lacking a detonator but that could be improvised.

“My watch! What are you doing?”

MacGyver sighed and looked up. “The sunlight concentrates through the crystal and the heat produced will detonate the bomb. We’re going to blow our way out. We just need to wait for the sun to hit the crystal.”

“But…why my watch? Why not yours?”

MacGyver smiled sheepishly. “I like my watch”

“We have to stop that acid leaking out!!” screeched Barbara, in an annoying high pitch voice. The acid she was referring to was pouring out of the vat and burning though the floor. “if we don’t they are doing to blow this place up!!”

“it’s ok” said MacGyver, “I picked up the chocolate on the way. It contains lactose and sucrose and it’s full of yummy chocolaty goodness….. mmmmm…. Chocolate….”

-------------------

“what happened down there MacGyver?? Why couldn’t you stop the leak?? We lost the whole facility”

A very red faced MacGyver looked up “sorry guys…. I got that sugary craving…..”

“Jack! We’re gonna have to bail out!”
“I think you’re right!”
“You got more than one parachute this time?” MacGyver scrambled to the back of the plane.
Jack followed closely. “But of course!”
Mac was skeptical as he studied the parachute packs. “When were these inspected last?”
“Uh...I dunno. Do we have to talk about this now?”
MacGyver eyed Jack, wondering why in the world he was surprised at their situation. “Does it make a difference now?!” he shouted above the coughing engines. One of these days he’d learn. He shrugged into one of the questionable packs. Probably not.

(Disclaimer: Keep in mind that I've never jumped from a plane and know next to nothing about parachutes! laugh.gif )

When he was clear of the plane, Mac yanked the rip cord. Nothing. Nearby, he heard Jack’s chute unfurl, catching air. He pulled again, harder. The chute came out, but was caught. The rocky mountainside was coming fast. Mac tried to work the fabric free from it’s lines without sending himself spinning. Almost...Yes! There it was! He slowed minutely, but the chute wasn’t opening fast enough. He hoped Jack was watching and cringing somewhere above him. The chute finally billowed. His stomach plunged at the sudden tug upward. The lift still didn’t give him enough time...MacGyver braced himself...

Failure
This was stunning. He’d been so very careful. Since leaving HIT he’d anticipated backlash...watching every corner, never letting his guard down. His failure was almost crippling. Ashton had been the one thing he’d thought safe.

He fingered the manila envelope. Now HIT had her. Supposedly. No, if they knew about her, then, yes, she was at their mercy. He’d have to play their game...but by his rules. He couldn’t just show up and count on HIT setting her free. And Ashton still couldn’t know about him. His jaw tightened. He hated to admit it...but he’d need help.

Failure Part 2: Irony and Old Vendetta
An idea formed. Murdoc almost dismissed it. MacGyver. He was like an illness you get used to, but never stop trying to eliminate. And he’d been trying since that first time MacGyver had outwitted him. Well, not him, really. He never should’ve trusted those common thugs.

Undoubtedly MacGyver would insist on no killing, maiming or revenge. He was soft. But smart. Not unlike himself, actually. Putting aside his vendetta for a short time would be worth the irony. It would take convincing, some theatrics, but in the end, MacGyver wouldn’t be able to resist. Murdoc began to like the idea.

Priceless

Here I am stuck in a warehouse, tied to a chair next to a bomb – again!
Good job I have this ‘Little Tree’ air freshener to hand.

Free at last… damn what a drop!
Hang on… if I just loop this tube sock over this wire then I can slide my way to freedom.
Easy!

Now to hot wire the truck… what have I got… a paper clip, ballpoint pen, rubber band, tweezers, nasal spray, turkey baster (why do I have a turkey baster in my jacket?).

Time’s a tickin’
No problem!

Through the gate and… straight to the 7-11!!

Old Friend
As he came to the bottom of the hill something red, sparkling in the tree-filtered sunlight, caught his eye. He paused, wondering what to make of it. He scanned his surroundings, edged closer. Both blades of the pocketknife were open. One was plunged into a fallen log, the other pointing in the direction of the mine.

He plucked up the knife, clicked the blades closed. He studied it, felt it’s weight. In the midst of the pain, confusion and fear, the knife was comforting, like an old friend. His hand closed over it. He felt like he was reclaiming something.

Expectations
“...explosives will turn you to rubble.”

If you’re gonna put it that way... I lifted the shotgun, put my eye to the site.

He taunted me, seeming eager for me to fire. I wanted to accommodate, but my finger fluttered over the trigger, not liking the feel. My left hand rested uneasily where it supported the barrel. C’mon, do it...just like the guy said. The gun faltered slightly, laying my hesitation bare.

“You can’t do it. It’s not in your blood.” The guy almost looked disappointed.

I lowered the shotgun. I don’t understand it...but this madman is right.

I don't know if I'm really happy with this one, but the idea intrigued me and I'll post it anyway. I already pared it down from 164 words...It may have lost something in that translation! laugh.gif

Falling
I told myself I couldn’t fall. That day on the mountain, Mike called out to me...I was too late.

I learned... Finally took a chance and fell. In the end, Deborah fell...I still believed she cared about me in her own way.

Sometimes I wake with Murdoc screaming my name. I wonder which of us will fall next time.

Ironic...my near fatal fall had nothing to do with Murdoc. I tried grabbing onto everything I could, including Harry. I gained more than I lost that day.

Sometimes I get tired, careening from one fall to the next...

Runner
I grew up in the shadow of my parents’ faith. Sometimes I’ve been dogged by it, comforted, puzzled by it. I don’t know if it was ever my own. My mother held fast that God has a plan for me. Thinking about how many times I’ve barely escaped death, it’s easy to say I was lucky, or smart...but...

Sometimes I wonder why I do what I do. Atoning for my failures? Maybe I stick my nose where it usually doesn’t belong because I don’t want to see what’s right in front of it.

I’m searching, I guess. Maybe running.

Loth, I hope you don't mind, but I found some chunks of your Drabbles and so here's one of your posts! wink.gif

More of Lothithil's Drabbles:

Zombie

I can hear Momma Lorraine’s voice, but it’s coming to me as if over a weak radio signal. I manage to open my eyes and am shocked to find that I’m lying on the floor with my head on her lap! She’s talking again but I can’t hear everything she’s saying. Breathe deeply, she says. Don’t fight, she says.

It feels like I’m dying! How can I not fight?

Then she’s gone and I’m being lowered into a crude coffin and the lid nailed shut. My heartbeat is a weak flutter in my chest; a dying bird in a box.

~~~
Connelly
I like Chris. She’s a real wildcat when she needs to be—and a dedicated photo-journalist. I feel lucky that I got to know her out here in the jungle. If I’d tried to wine and dine her in L.A., I would have choked. Here, with only a dusty shirt beneath us, and roast lizard for supper, she and I got along just fine.
I leaned in for that first kiss, holding my breath. I knew she wouldn’t be able to tell how nervous I was, because she was trembling. Maybe it was just the firelight playing in her hair.
Tricks o’ the Trade
You steal my furniture… you lure me out to your hanger… you set me up and laugh at me… and then you con me into coming along on this crazy adventure. Sometimes it’s more trouble than it’s worth, being a friend of yours.
You said you are dying. I never could tell you ‘No’ when we were kids. I certainly can’t say it now.
But, when that air-tank exploded, I felt that old familiar singing in my blood, and I can’t wipe the smile off of my face. I hate to admit it, Jack… you’re right—I am having fun!
More from Loth:
QUOTE
Life Lessons
Seems I spent half my childhood with my fists up for a fight. I always felt bad, dragging home with a black eye to Mom’s look of disapproval. She never scolded me for fighting—she didn’t need to. When she frowned, I regretted.
When Dad saw me, he didn’t want an explanation. He’d give me a stern look and ask, “Was there any other way to solve the problem?” If there wasn’t, he’d give me a reason to think first next time!
Some people only know how to fight with their fists. Dad taught me to fight with my mind.
Ladders
“I don’t own one.”
“That’s ridiculous! Everybody owns one! How do you change your lightbulb when it burns out?”
“Like this.” Mac reached into a pocket and brought out a match. “But I only do it this way when it’s dark outside.”
“How does a match fix a lightbulb, and what does the time have to do with anything?”
“If the sun is still up, then I don’t need the match. But if it’s dark outside, I strike the match to find my telephone. I call my landlady and she brings her own ladder.
“You know me, Pete… I hate heights!”
~~~~~~~~

X-File

So the house is full of cobwebs, though I haven’t seen a single spider… and yeah, the doors do tend to lock themselves and that window somehow opens itself no matter how many times I’ve pushed it down… and sure, there’s something moving around behind the walls, though I’d be willing to bet it’s just a mouse or two... but I still maintain that there’s nothing going on here that doesn’t have a sound scientific and logical explanation.

I know why Penny won’t believe me that there’s no such thing as ghosts! What a silly girl—

What was that noise? unsure.gif

~~~~~~~~~
Nicolai
It happened right before my eyes. The screech of tires and a frantic shout… and Nicolai is gone. And all I can do is stand helplessly in the street.
At the Cafë Mozart, we once drank together—him with his Romanian wine, me with a glass of cider—and we’d toast the beautiful women that passed our way with long dark lashes lowered and flirting… we’d both claim that she had eyes only for us and not the other man.
Turn around, Mac, and walk away. Don’t dare look back. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
Pegasus
I found myself looking straight into the dark eyes of the most magnificent animal I have ever seen. His coat was so white it glowed, mane long and thick and fell like silk on that high, proud neck. But those eyes… they held intelligence beyond that of a mere animal—almost human.
I offered my hands in greeting… I had to make friends fast.
He flared his nostrils at me, his withers shivered slightly as my fingers brushed him gently.
As I laid the saddle in place, I could tell the Arabian was ready to run with me.
Easy
My hand slipped, sending my homemade hang-glider into a spin. It just didn’t register that that was my blood spattered all over the struts. I didn’t realize yet that I had been shot.
Not until the second bullet smacked into my shoulder. That one I felt! My whole arm went limp and I was suddenly blind with pain. I was fighting to get the glider’s nose up… a tricky task with one hand, even when you’re not about to black-out from shock.
The next thing I knew, I was lying face-down in the river. What the heck happened to ‘easy’?
Here's the one I found by Mac:
QUOTE
Bitter Lament
His lungs burn, as do his heart and soul.
All these people are asking for is the privilege of being allowed to do their job safely, without fear of illness. The growers would ultimately have so much to gain. Why, then, was it so difficult? Why did Tony have to die?
A bitter cough rises from deep in his chest, searing his throat, giving an excuse for tears to well up and seep from swollen eyes. It is not his fight, but if he, who has a strong voice, cannot bring himself to fight on their behalf, who else will?
Oh wait....Here are more from Loth! wink.gif
QUOTE
Zia
Her hands are rough from her hard life, but her touch is as soft as silk. Ahmed doesn’t realize how strong his mother is… I didn’t realize it, either, until she used that iron. Her tears told me that she felt it as keenly as I.
My dreams are filled with dark hair and the cold Afghan wind… but her voice comforts me, and I can find sleep somewhere away from the pain.
I hate to leave, but I know I must… for both their sakes. I’ve never had one person hurt me so deeply and love me so completely.
Leessa (I'm taking deliberate liberties with the spelling of the name!)
I met her on assignment. Fell in love with a fighting spirit, her effortless, unadorned beauty. She was killed right before my eyes.
When I saw her walking—sparkling—through the lobby of that hotel, I felt that love once laid to rest had been resurrected in my heart.
I would have done anything she asked… and I did!
Can any love survive a second betrayal? I speak not of her trap or of her lies, but of her second death… holding her in my arms, I watched as life faded from her eyes.
People wonder why I avoid commitment!
Rosary Beads
Once upon a time, it was me that she loved. Now she serves God. Though it’s me she looks at with longing, she’s moved beyond my reach.
She stayed one step ahead of me back in those days, too. I loved her because she was a runner—literally and figuratively—just like me. The day I decided to give her The Ring, she was suddenly too far ahead for me to catch. I’ve been running ever since, trying to match that speed.
I have a feeling she’s going to be slipping through my fingers for the rest of my life.
Osiris
This is a world of black and white. I have the strangest feelings; gone is the urgency and anxiety I have always felt. I know only peace and a sense of contentment, like the way I feel when I come home after a tiring assignment.
There is a ship—a huge, mysterious vessel. There are many people on it; many more are waiting patiently to board. They seem to know that the ship won’t leave without them.
If I sail from this port, where will I go?
My feet feel heavy, as if they know this is not my time…
Eyrie
I’ve managed to hang onto this thing through a lot of years of moving around and out-right running. The cover is smooth and clean, the spine is stiff. It looks new and well cared-for…instead of twenty years old and ignored.
Why have I kept it? These slick pages and washed-out photos hold memories that I’ve never felt a need to stir up. And yet when I wanted it, I knew exactly where the book was, lurking in a drawer among other the other things I guard but never look at.
Do I really want to open this book and remember?
Gone To Ground
I don’t really feel safe until the trees close over my head. In the City, there’s many people hurrying around, living their lives fast—racing to survive.
Now, I’m a big fan of speed… love the excitement and danger… but I’ve got to take a break now and then and recharge my batteries, so to speak. That’s when I head for the hills.
Out here, you’ve got to learn to listen. There’s speed out here, too, but it is more subtle. Finding food and shelter are first priorities, and being fast isn’t always so important to survival as being patient.
Thanks, Rocky and Amy!
Wingman
I love flying. There’re few things that make me as happy as the wind in my hair and face… or the throb of jet engines beneath my fingertips! Skiing, Skating, driving… they’re all just substitutes for this euphoric craving; what I do when I can’t get off the ground.
Sure, flying has gotten me into as much trouble as it’s brought me pleasure. I mean, we’re talking defying the Laws of Gravity and Physics here! If you bend these Laws too far, you don’t get a ticket… you get a tombstone!
Still, I grab the sky every chance I get!
Defying Gravity
Mac checked his straps one last time, making sure that his parachute was secure. He could see Jack waiting next to the landing area… it was his job to make sure Mac didn’t roll off the old mattress, but Mac was pretty sure that it was the bike that he was more worried about—it was Jack’s!
The experiment was ready to begin.
Just as the wheels left the edge of the barn roof and Mac was sailing through the air, he heard his mom crying out, "Mac! What on earth are you doing and where are my new bedsheets??”
Mac Drabbles (re-posts of lost works of Loth)
I tried not to repost any drabbles that have already been reposted my kind folks! (thanks!! blush.gif ) I don't mean to overwhelm anyone with this huge post. Just pick through and read as you like. Comment freely! It is sometimes fun to figure out which episode spawned or inspired each drabble!
And be sure to WRITE YOUR OWN and SHARE IT!! biggrin.gif
wink.gif
Easy
My hand slipped, sending my homemade hang-glider into a spin. It just didn’t register that that was my blood spattered all over the struts. I didn’t realize yet that I had been shot.
Not until the second bullet smacked into my shoulder. That one I felt! My whole arm went limp and I was suddenly blind with pain. I was fighting to get the glider’s nose up… a tricky task with one hand, even when you’re not about to black-out from shock.
The next thing I knew, I was lying face-down in the river. What the heck happened to ‘easy’?
You Don’t Know Murdoc!
The first time I ever faced this man, he tried to have me killed. What was it about that one incident that has set him with such determination to see me dead? After we escaped from the bazookas (sorry again about your cab, Jack old buddy) he seemed to forget about his games with Pete and the DXS, and turned his attention to little ol’ me… how is that fair?
And just what does a guy have to do to kill Murdoc? I’ve never really wanted his blood on my hands… but he never gives up. And he never dies!
Ambush
Mac looked up in surprise; he’s been so intent on freeing Penny that when Murdoc stepped out on to the verandah, he seemed to appear from out of nowhere.
Dressed in black, Murdoc wore a cold smile and a colt 45. He smoothly drew his gun and aimed from the hip.
The barrel of the gun looked big as a cannon. Mac wanted to run but there was nowhere to run to…
Something hit him hard in the chest, and then he was tumbling backward into the air. He heard Penny scream before the frost-coated earth rushed up at him.
Lucky Shot
Pete’s own heart nearly stopped as he ran up to the side of his friend, where he lay sprawled upon the ground. MacGyver had fallen from the balcony above the hotel, and he wasn’t moving. A thin string of smoke rose from an ugly hole over Mac’s heart, but no breath of life steamed from his lips. Beside him, Jack removed his hat and hung his head sadly.
Then suddenly Mac coughed and groaned aloud. Fumbling, he drew out of his shirt pocket a badly dented knife, the bullet-hole not quite defacing the small cross carved in the wooden handle.
Saxophone Blue
His life slipped away from me—just like that. He was a great man… a gentle man… a man of wonderful humor and intellect. He was trying to protect me. He always did put his students first.
He only ever wanted me to realize my potential… he said that he expected great things. Now, more potential and brilliance than I will ever possess has been snuffed out and forever silenced.
I reach down and closed his eyes with my fingers. The weight of his death crushes me, and I really don’t care who sees my tears. I can’t undo this.
Eagle Scout
I remember the day I got my first one. I had been working toward a badge, trying to tie a slip-knot, and wound up with the Gordian instead.
I ended up having to borrow a knife from Mrs. Fryfocle to cut my hapless friend out of the tangle. When I offered it back to her, she looked down her sharp nose, peering at me through her rhinestone-studded spectacles. “Hold on to it, Son,” she said, “I think you’re going to need it again. Best to always be prepared.”
Those words were good advice. I hope that I’ll remember them forever.
Too Much Gravity
What am I doing up here?
What insane impulse possessed me to climb this mountain? Sure, it looked fun… and Mike had climbed it successfully before. Twice! She’s an expert. What could happen?
Why do I feel like a weigh a thousand pounds suddenly, and the ropes tying me to the earth seem as thin as fishing wire-- fragile and slippery in my sweating hands. The granite under my boots is as crumbly as old cheese. The wind mocks me.
Hold on to me, Mike. I’m going to fall…
“Don’t look down,” she repeats. That’s easy for her to say!
Tourist
I don't like to talk about my days in the military. It's not because I’m ashamed of what I did. I served my country and I was proud to do it. But I prefer the way I serve now... not just my country, or a president, or an organization like the Foundation... I serve people. Sometimes, it's people that I know-- friends. Sometimes I serve people that I've never met... people that I will never get to meet. That doesn't make them less deserving of help, if they need it.
That's why I just smile when someone calls me 'civilian'.
Ice Man
Cramped and twisted I lie here, crystals of ice falling into my eyes. I’d take a deep breath but something hurts inside, and I’m not sure how much air I’ve got down here.
I’ve never been so cold—and I’m from Minnesota… we INVENTED cold! Can’t keep my hands from shaking… can barely hold the ski pole as I try to drill upward. With some luck, I’ll be able to reach the surface and get some air… and some help.
I’m tired, but I don’t dare relax. I don’t want to wake up and find out that I’m a popsicle!
Close Encounters of the Clean Kind
“That’s impossible.”
“Pete… I know what I saw.”
“There has to be some other explanation.”
“If there is then I don’t know it! I was standing right there… and the thing was right over there… and I’m not crazy.”
“I never said that you were!”
“No, but you were thinking it.”
“Well… you did get hit pretty hard on the head… maybe you hallucinated the whole thing?”
“Four other people saw it, too! And what about this… thing?”
“It’s just a vacuum cleaner, Mac. It doesn’t mean anything.”
Mac shook his head. “I told Phil I wasn’t in the market…”
Cohler (formerly Leessa)
I met her on assignment. Fell in love with a fighting spirit, her effortless, unadorned beauty. She was killed right before my eyes.
When I saw her walking—sparkling—through the lobby of that hotel, I felt that love once laid to rest had been resurrected in my heart.
I would have done anything she asked… and I did!
Can any love survive a second betrayal? I speak not of her trap or of her lies, but of her second death… holding her in my arms, I watched as life faded from her eyes.
People wonder why I avoid commitment?
Defusing the Situation
How did I get into this line of work? A tangle of wire that looks like rainbow spaghetti and enough plastic explosive to blow this Minnesota boy halfway home… and a jury-rigged cooking timer that says I’m twenty seconds away from finding out if the guy who built this bomb is an amateur or a pro.
I’d rather be skiing. I’d rather be skating on a frozen lake back home. Red or Blue? Ten more seconds. They always make this part look so easy on TV…
A quick prayer and pick one. Blue’s always been a good color for me…
Early Mourning
It’s cold out here.
Sitting on this dock, looking out over the young day setting over this placid lake, I work hard to not think. I want to draw the mist and fog off the water and fill up my head, so that there’s no room for thinking. I want to become this lake; sun shining off the calm surface, but underneath—freezing cold.
I can’t stop remembering that there’s no Mike in the world anymore. We were linked together by more than a rope. We were friends. We could have been more.
It’s cold out here…but I’m colder inside.
One Wrong Step
The air is crisp; the ground is cold and wet. I just rolled over a thorny bush but I don’t notice that discomfort so much as the steel jaws of a bear trap that has closed on my leg. Usually, a man doesn’t scream… he hollers. But that’s not what I did… I screamed. And I’ll go on screaming as long as it takes to make me feel better!
Okay, maybe I’ll stop now. The top of my head feels like it’s about to come off. I think I’ll just lie here for a while and swear under my breath.
Vision Quest
Drums are beating in my ears… maybe it’s just my heartbeat. I thought that finding this old abandoned mine was a lucky thing, but as I fall to my knees and realize that I’m not getting up, I wonder if this place is destined to become my tomb.
Funny how rocks feel soft when you really don’t want to lie down. This would be as comfortable as my couch back home… if not for the burning pain in my belly.
A campfire flares before my eyes and a man appears. He’s wearing a feather… this is a dream, isn’t it?
Gypsy Magic
She was fiery in temperament-- red hair doesn’t lie-- with an aura of magnetism and strength about her, and not a little pure feminine power. She was used to being the center. Not many men could ignore or refuse her.
Maybe it was my lack of interest that attracted her; I was focused on the watch and my mission; she was used to being the focus. She must have found it refreshing to have to try.
What is it that makes women want to seduce me? I gotta change my cologne next time I go on a mission or something…
Red Sweater
There’s nothing sweeter than an unspoiled slope… seasoned pack under a fair layer of fresh powder! Any serious skier that you ask will agree. The only thing that can make it better is a pair of fresh waxed skis and having the run all to your self!
Red-Eye isn’t all mine today nor is it unspoiled, but the hour is right and it’s not too crowded now, and it’s a steep enough slope to keep most of the beginners out from underfoot.
The mountain is perched on my shoulders as I push off for the last run of the day.
River
There’s something about this River—that’s river with a big “R”, mister!—The Amazon; everything is alive… and half of everything is deadly. It’s an adventure just sitting back on the boat and watching the shores slip past.
Charlie is just too high-strung. The man’s focus has been things with wings, or the pages of his sketch book, for so long sometimes I wonder if he even notices anything else. A brilliant scientist, but he’s missing part of the picture; life is happening all around him, and he doesn’t see.
I like it here. Anything could happen… at any moment!
The Recital
The boy edged out onto the small stage, carrying a guitar that seemed nearly as tall as he was. He was not a slight child, but when he nervously took his seat, he held the instrument as if keeping a shield between himself and the critical eyes of the judges.
Ellen met the boy’s eyes as he glanced desperately in her direction, frozen with stage-fright. She smiled at her son and her lips formed words, soundless and sweet.
The boy smiled at her. Taking the neck of the guitar in his long-fingered hands, he played only for her that day.
Starkoss
When his hand closed on my arm I tried to pull back, but several things held me unmoving. His grip was firm but warm, not cold as I expected. His eyes were indeed mesmerizing; gentle and knowing with a confidence unshakeable by doubt. And his words— he spoke words that I had never heard with my ears, only with my heart.
I’ve seen Jack pull too many rabbits out of a hat to believe in magic. But this trick leaves me wondering… the skin on my arm tingles where he touched me, though many years have passed since we parted.
Wit’s End
Two things that my grandfather gave me when I was a kid have made me what I am today: a chemistry set and a subscription to ‘Popular Mechanics’ magazine.
I learned what things are made of, how they work, and what makes them work together. I think that’s the reason that I can usually figure out how to put together things that don’t normally work together to get myself out of trouble.
However, there is a limit to what you can do with duct tape, a book of matches, and a Swiss army knife!
Sometimes things just can’t be fixed…
Mac’s Menu
A lot of folks think I’m a vegetarian. I guess I can’t blame them… especially if they look inside my shopping cart when I go to the market. I do lean toward bean curd and tofu… and I love a good baked squash!
They’d change their minds if they ever caught me out in the woods. Sure, there’s lots of edible roots, leaves, berries, nuts and such to be found, if you have the time to forage. When I do… I do, but when I don’t… that’s what snares are for!
Sometimes it’s easier to let lunch come to you!
Job Description
I move around a lot… do a little of this and a little of that.
Trouble with the law or cold feet—a little of that, but mostly I just wanted to see the world and meet people… see how they’re different and how they’re the same. I’m not a romantic!—I’m just a guy…
I’m sort of a handyman; I fix things… help people who are in need of help.
It has to do with peace and freedom. There are some people who don’t like either—I’m not one of those!
What do I do? It’s hard to say…
"The Gauntlet"
When I was a kid, back in Minnesota, I had a Cub Scout den mother, a Mrs. Fryfogel. She taught us backwoods commonsense, like don't drop crumbs on the trail because you never know what kind of critter might be right behind you picking up the pieces. I'll never forget the motto she taught us: be prepared.
