Hi folks,

I usually slip my SAK in my pocket when I go out... though, when I used to work as a computer hardware technician, my Gerber tool was my best friend. It lived in my toolbox (haha it WAS my toolbox). Given the similarities of each, I still prefer the SAK.

For the everyday problems that you face, how often do you folks need a pair of pliers? How often would Mac have been better off with a one-handed Gerber? Probably only in particular situations, because the blades on a multi-tool do not come out very fast.

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

off the top of my head, I can't think of a situation where MacGyver needed more than his SAK.

I think part of the whole MacGyver persona was that he didn't need to carry tools with him. He had a SAK with a few basic utensils and the rest he made up as he needed.

I don't think it would have turned out the same if he had carried something like a leatherman on his belt instead of a SAK in his pocket. There's something very down to earth and humble about a SAK compared to those multi-tools.

You're totally right about that. MacGyver really wasn't about preparedness as much as about flexibility. That's what appeals to me about the SAK + duct tape setup, its simplicity invites creative uses. I used to carry a single-bladed lockback knife because I "didn't need no sophisticated knife-tool."

Alas, I spent so much time finely sharpening the blade that I could never bring myself to use the point as a screwdriver! tongue.gif

Mac would pick the good old fashioned SAK and I also prefer a SAK. I use it a lot to cut up boxes at work. That's about the only thing I use it for at work. Cutting up boxes. Fun to use when you have a lot of boxes. laugh.gif

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
