The word filters are an automatic function built into the forum software. The only control I have over them is which words are filtered and either switching the whole system on or off. I can't set it on for one forum and off for another, unfortunately.

It wasn't the censoring that so injured me, but that I didn't get to give my permission. It was just done. As a writer, even of fanfic, I wasn't okay with that.

I don't know if the word you used would still be picked up or not? I can't remember what it was but our Fan fiction rules have always said "Administrators of this site reserve the right to move, edit or delete any fiction found to be in violation of these rules. " and "By posting your fiction here you agree to comply with the above rules."... ergo you give permission for the word filters to do their job. Having said that, I do understand the sentiment behind your comments. For me it's one of those tricky issues where your standing on the matter changes and evolves over time. While I have no intentions of allowing cursing in other parts of the forums, I am more of the opinion now that since we have the ratings for the stories, word filters don't really need to be applied in this forum. Having said that I still have the question in my head of does a MacGyver fan-fiction need explicit language in it int he first place? That question then gets balanced out by questions about should we be limiting the kind of fiction we allow here? If people want to explore a more mature MacGyver, why shouldn't we allow that as well as the classic MacGyver? we have the ratings so everyone can choose the levels of story they want to read. So there are some deep and meaningful arguments I have with myself whenever I start thinking about the fan fiction section (as indeed there are with other rules and situations here) and I still haven;t come to a satisfactory answer yet.

No, he's right. Watch an 80's movie that is rated PG and you will see kids with guns, kids smoking, kids cussing, etc. None of that would be allowed today.

Is that PG back then or PG now? I remember watching movies on TV which had whole scenes cut out or had the sound track edited to remove curse words, much to the amusement of many people. Beverley Hills cop was always funny to watch with the night club scene being edited so much that the sound didn't match the pictures at all. laugh.gif

You make a valid point, and I certainly have no hard feelings now. I probably just didn't read the rule right or something. Still, it did put me off, I admit. That said, I do not envy your position Not easy to be the one in charge. You do have to take a bit of a "you can't please all the people all the time" approach, I think.

Though I am still curious which two words you picked. As I said, I have guess, but there are three candidates. Two "standard" curse words and one that is far dirtier, but far less used. Anyway...I digress. It's really no big deal.

As for the PG thing, I meant then. Far worse. Much more swearing, violence, drugs (smoking, kids drinking beer), etc. And while I hate to say this because I personally don't believe that the world is any worse now than it has ever been, but I think it all boils down to what PG stands for: Parental Guidance. The whole point of PG movies is to watch them with your kids and help them with any adult issues that, oh, I don't know, they'll have to deal with as adults. I'm not one for coddling and pretending nothing bad exists, personally, and I am violently opposed to everyone getting a trophy, so to speak. I think this idea was less prevalent then. But it will swing back the other way. It always does... and I digress again.

And of course, the 80s are responsible for the PG-13 rating (Thanks, Temple of Doom! That was PG!) here in the States. It's not that they showed more "bad stuff" (they did probably show less), it's just that the ratings were lower on worse stuff - possibly because there was no in between rating for so long. Kids were expected to grow up sooner. Ironic in many ways.

And the movie Red Dawn was the first movie ever rated PG-13. The whole rating thing is kinda overrated to me. Making everything PG-13 is kinda stupid. PG-13 horrorflicks flop. Do have to admit though Drag Me To Hell was a very good film. PG-13 actioners is something else but still... The Rush Hour flicks could've been great R-rated films if they were made like twenty years ago. PG like you said means helping kids with adult themes and so on but what's the use in protecting them from R-rated films if they're going to find out anyway? Once they hit their teens they're going to get confronted with alcohol, cigarettes, violence, nudity, swearing anyway.

That's my opinion. I grew up with the actioners of the 80's and 90's. Mostly the Lethal Weapon films. I remember watching Lethal Weapon 2 when I was only 7. Others were discovered when DVD hit my life like Die Hard and The Last Boy Scout. Especially The Last Boy Scout is one of those films that represent early '90's very well.

'Those were the days!'

Ratings are used because extensive research from many countries over many years have all come to the same result that exposing children to extreme violence and sexual material has a profound effect on their psychological development. They don't do as well in school and they don't do as well in society.

How many times have we heard about bad criminals and murderers being either directly abused or indirectly exposed to abuse or violence as children? Most really bad criminals come from really bad backgrounds, where they were exposed regularly to the kind of behaviors they, themselves now exhibit. Children don't have the mental capacity to fully process what they are seeing, and if they see it enough times they accept it as being normal, that acceptance of the unacceptable usually carries on into adult life.

In most cases being allowed to watch adult orientated movies at such a young age is usually an indication of bad parenting. Although my personal opinion is that anyone who allows their kids to watch R rated movies at young age aren't worthy of being called parents.

Though still not for the near future, (however depending on how things turn out) and still with Children of the United Nations far from finished, the past few days some inspiration popped up for a new story. Can't say too much yet but I'm thinking of an emotional action/drama à la Gone Baby Gone and the game Indigo Prophecy, involving MacGyver and Nikki as sorts of private investigators. And maybe if I find a way I might add the characters of my adult story to spice things up a bit. But that's maybe for in a couple of months, first things first. Still got plenty of other things to do and finishing up my other story as well. Just wanted to say another story is at the early stage of developing but if things turn out good it might become a great story. I'll keep you posted!

I'm writing Stargate again! Woo-hoo! After a while away from that fandom, it's talking to me again! So, Mac might be coming along, too. You never know.

I read a couple of your SG-1 one stories yesterday on ff and must admit I really liked them. I didn't have time to leave a review but I just wanted to say I really liked "Hairball".

It's the holidays, and I'm just coming off one of the worst years of my life emotionally, so I'm pretty exhausted right now. My New Year's resolution is to return to writing, so maybe you will read something of mine again starting in January.

Understandable about not writing during a rough year. I too have not done any writing for the past year do to real life problems getting in the way. I hope 2010 is a better year for you and I do hope I get to read more of your work with the new year.

I'm not only for the most part inspirationless, I hardly have time to do anything else. Work is pretty slow but I also have my volunteering work which is pretty demanding and counting on others is also out of the question. Not to mention I have my gymclasses now to think about. I hope somewhere a couple of days before Christmas and New Year to write a bit, if possible. Or else it might even not be until February. Winter sales are coming closer too.

I just haven't had time to be around. I've finished a story, but am a bit reluctant to post it because it deals with a topic that seems to be sensitive around here. It's kind of similar to The Challenge, except that the murder victim is a gay woman, rather than a black man, and the killers are members of a homophobic cult with a thin veneer of Christianity, rather than white supremacists. (I do make it clear in the story that these cult members are the exception among Christians, not the rule.) I'm just concerned that someone might make it into a big, stinky food-fight.

Well MacGyver made a few ripples with some of it's story lines in the show too, so you'd be following the tradition of MacGyver if your story did cause a stir. laugh.gif

True. I'd be proud to follow in those footsteps!

It's not quite done yet... there are a few parts that are kind of weak and that don't quite fit. You know how sometimes you start writing a story and you kind of have an idea of where it's going, but your characters aren't really developed yet? I was able to bring the story to a conclusion, but the middle part of it with the bad guys is the part I'm not happy with.

Just write it as it comes. I do that and I don't intend on changing that. So rewrites are kinda out of the question. With exception of When The World Changes. That was a hard one to write.

Characters are hard for me too. In my adult stories I just came up with names gave them a profile and further more I let them do all day stuff. But an actual character development is harder. Gotta learn to give them emotions and how to make them use those emotions. The only character I actually made and that I'm proud of is 'Ingrid' the woman in my adult stories. I intend to have her play a role in my new story as mentioned in one of my previous posts.

Mine is finished and posted. I tweaked a few things, and am pretty happy with it.
Now if I just finish the other one I'm working on... it's a crossover fic, and as such, is a lot tougher.

I might start another couple fics... I do have some half-formed ideas rattling around in my head.

I have been thinking about this site seance July. That was the last time I was on. I have missed everyone and the stories that all of you post. I would have been on the site more but I just got my new computer for Christmas. As for my writing go's I need help with them. I looking for an editor. I have so many stories that need work. My plan is to rewrite The Stringer. I know that some of you do not like the fact that Mac has a son,but I thought that I would fill in some of the missing scenes from that epo. I get mad every time I watch it. It should have been longer. One hour was way to sort for that kinda story. I guess the reason I love that idea of The Stringer story is because I had a similar event happen to me. I found out that I had a bother. It happened around the same time that The Stringer epo came on and I was a big fan then.

I do have to tell all of you that I am very glad that this site is here. I fill so at home here. Thanks Rock for every thing you do here. w00t.gif

I can only add this: after I found out about fan fiction, thanks to this site, I read every story available in the Library. At first it seemed odd to me that people want to write about a hero that has disappeared from tv a long time ago. But after a while I got used to the idea and besides: the original MacGyver is a fictional character to start with, so why not add new adventures to that fictional life?
So I got hooked and when I visited this site, my first stop was the Library, to see if there were any new stories. Well, not anymore. It is sad to see hardly anybody posting a story any more. Whatever the cause - writer's block, personal misery, shifting interests, new ambitions - I miss the pleasure of finding a new chapter, a drabble, anything.

So how about making a fresh start in 2010, dear writers?

Well, those causes are my problems. Mostly writerblocks and personal misery (youth house, work), but that's life. Also time is a problem.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
Sometimes you just have to die a little inside to be reborn and rise again as a stronger and wiser version of you.
It's better to be a little sad than to be fake content.

Yes, I know what you mean. But still, you wouldn't have to write a Big Piece straight away. You could try a little drabble first, maybe that will help you to get back on track. You know you have the skills and the talent, so why not give it a try.
I'm just saying..
