Yeah, it just sorta happens. I caught myself this morning picking out a "Mac-themed" outfit to wear xD. I didn't plan it, it just happened...ya think maybe he's rubbing off on us? XD

I felt a little MacGyverish last week when I discovered a poisonous snake in a doorway that we needed to use for work. I am not good at identifying snakes, but noticed the somewhat triangular shaped head. With that in mind I decided I should heed a little extra caution.

I knew we needed to move it, but the question was how. So, feeling a little MacGyverish I looked around for what I could use. I found a piece of pipe about 2 cm in diameter and about 1 m long. The snake appeared to be only a couple feet long, so I thought the pipe would be long enough for me to safely use. I had a fleeting thought of trying to trap the neck and grab just behind the head of it (like Mac did with the one in the teen's sleeping bag), but I decided that wasn't such a great idea. I took a quick picture of it with my phone, before disturbing it. Then with the pipe, I lifted it up under the center of it's body and kind of slung it about 1 m at a time down the sidewalk. When I had gotten it at least 25' from the doorway I let it crawl into the grass. It's a really wooded and grassy area, so I didn't think it necessary to remove or kill it...just get it away from the doorway.

I was quite amused at my co-worker's reactions to the snake. Not only the person that was with me (who promptly jumped back into our vehicle), but the ones back at the lab whom I showed the picture to. Several said they would have screamed and been back in the vehicle with the other!!

Not bad for a girl...even my male co-workers said they wouldn't have moved it!!

In the basement of one of our past houses, we discovered a litter of some variety of garter snakes covering our two wheeler. Yeesh, that was...*shudder*...snakes...
They were harmless so my dad just opened the basement door and let them leave on their own. Oh my gosh, there were so many.

That's the same basic reaction I got from my co-workers too! lol I don't really mind snakes. I don't want a pet snake and I want the poisonous ones away from where people and pets are, but otherwise they keep down the rodent population in my opinion.

This little guy was about 2-3' from where I was standing too. So I admit I was a little cautious.

Now any kind of wasp and this gal will be heading for the hills!!! I'm not allergic, just hate them!!! Snakes and spiders are fine.

Moved another snake today. Got this one ticked off, but appeared non-poisonous. Still kept my distance, I got a longer stick this time!!

I am trying to get better about the wasps though. I managed to spray a nest with wasp spray without looking like a mummy a month ago!! I think MacGyver is the inspiration on that. The way he faces his fears (heights - hesitates and then does what's needed) during his different adventures is helping me try to be a little braver around my fears (wasps).

I've seen not one but two haircuts this week - the second one quite rightly paired with a leather jacket, jeans and ratty sneakers...

Good for you, Mela. I actually think snakes are cool, but I'm cautious around any I don't recognize. We do have rattlers here in Minnesota, but they're down in the extreme southeastern part of the state.

Most girls I grew up with were so, "EEK! A snake/spider/bug!" that I think some of them were doing it partly on purpose (though the "why" escapes me... unless they thought guys liked the "helpless/jumpy female" shtick. ) I grew up running around the woods, so I was totally used to seeing bugs and spiders and so on. The only bugs I can't stand are centipedes... those weird, feathery legs give me the creeps! *shudder*

But back to the topic at hand...

Sometimes when I've been with my dad we've had those sorts of moments when I feel like I'm in a Mac episode. Dad is pretty handy, and so am I. I remember when I was taking physics my senior year of high school, one of our assignments was to build a Rube Goldberg machine. Dad helped me out, and I felt like it could have been a Mac-built contraption, as we used things like sand, ping-pong balls, and a balloon. Also, very often when I've been camping or hiking, I find myself half-expecting to see Mac coming down the trail towards me at any moment.

going camping out in the middle of nowhere. Hiked in and pitched a tent near the shoreline of a lake. Made a fire pit by gathering rocks near the shore. Caught a fish and cooked it for dinner over the fire. Felt like a MacGyver episode. Mac likes the outdoors.

My snake and wasp stories actually collide in KY. My family had a cabin down there out in the woods, and my sister ran into a copperhead, scared the *censored* out of her. My dad cut it's head off with a shovel. There was also an old outhouse out back of the cabin, I was fooling around near it one day and slammed the door. Turns out that the wasps that had built a nest in the eaves didn't appreciate that. They stung the hell out of me.

If your cabin looked anything like this, snakes and bugs were the least of your worries, Drawz, trust me. lol

I thought about this post a few times recently myself. Spring is coming around down here (finally) which means both snakes and those pointy-back-sided bugs are too!

I am working on a MacGyver moment type project at home this week. My washing machine is giving me trouble and I'm going to take it apart (a little) to see if I can fix it myself. I'm definitely not as knowledgeable as Mac, but sometimes I just get stubborn enough to try.
