Hi everyone, I posted this same info. as a reply in another thread after macgybl sent me a message asking about the dark brown G-2 Raider worn by RDA in later seasons. As far as I know, nobody has been able to confirm the brand of the newer dark brown one. Many have mentioned the possibility of it being made by Gibson & Barnes or Avirex. It has also been compared to the G-2 worn by RDA in Season 3 and later in Stargate SG-1.

Anyway, the reason for posting this is because I may have found the answer. I've not heard of this brand prior to seeing an advertisement online but it seems the J. Peterman Co. out of Lexington Kentucky makes a G-2 that looks nearly identical to the one from Stargate and from the later seasons of MacGyver. It also looks like the Avirex and Gibson versions so this could answer those questions as well. The seventh picture shows the top of the storm flap being a perfect 90 degree angle like the one from Stargate and the jacket later worn in MacGyver. The others, including the Schott & Chevignon, had a nice sloping shape at the top of the storm flap. The flap on the dark brown one used in the later seasons of MacGyver also appeared to be wider than the others which is a characteristic of this one as well.

Next, I thought I would mention that RDA's G-2 in "Legend of The Holy Rose Part 2" could have been a J. Peterman version since it had the larger storm flap with the squared off top. An example can be seen perfectly at 0:06 seconds in the following video clip where Mac is explaining the laser (or optical pump). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNL8QJJGtHU

Though the color of this one matches the older G-2's, it could have been aged or perhaps it was already relatively old when used for this episode. Note the J. Peterman jacket in the first eBay link I posted shows how this one will change to that light brown color like the others do. The Peterman also has the white lining like the Avirex minus the picture of the aviator. A pic of this can be seen in the 6th picture in the first eBay link.

Obviously, this is speculative but since I have never seen this brand mentioned on here I felt it was worthy of posting. Hope others find this interesting

J. Peterman -aka- John Peterman is a real person. A fictional version of him was portrayed by John O'Hurley on Seinfeld.

No problem at all Not only is this site great, but so are the members. I enjoy doing this and figured that maybe it will help steer some of the individuals who haven't gotten a G-2 yet in the right direction if they're interested in finding one.

I think I'm going to order one of these next week after I look into the way they run in terms of sizing a bit more. I thought I would post a review of the jacket here once I get it if that is something other members might like to read.

You mean about which episodes? It's no problem at all! Yes, you might be right. There are actually a few other details I've noticed on the Peterman jacket that are indeed different than the dark brown one that RDA. However, from what I can tell, Peterman has offered this jacket for some time and there is a possibility that it has undergone changes since it first came out. For example, the ones I've looked at on eBay (the links in my above post have those small, shaped pieces of metal with the leather pull tabs on them to use as zipper pull tabs for the the two chest zipper pockets. The main zipper is like this as well. The picture on the lower right when looking at the jacket on their website has regular all metal pull tabs common on most jackets today. The logo and size tag on the inside of the jacket under the collar is different between these two as well.

Also, I remember reading on http://www.thefedoralounge.com/ about how many of the Chevignon flight jackets from the 80's had shorter sleeves and an overall shorter length from collar to waistband than many other similar jackets from different brands (including those in the USA). Because of this, what you mention about the Peterman jacket appearing to be longer may indeed be true. I couldn't find the exact forum on The Fedora Lounge but it was written by someone who owned a Chevignon bomber jacket (althought not exactly like Mac's) from the 80's because there were pictures provided by the member.

Lastly, in the "Trail of Tears" episode when the court session ends, MacGyver puts the new jacket on before leaving and the lining is visible but I can't make out the label. It is a white lining just like the Avirex G-2 but unlike the Avirex one, it is blank. The Avirex has the picture of the aviator in it similar to the Chevignon. The current Peterman version doesn't have a white lining unless this was a characteristic of an earlier version. I was looking to see when the company started making this jacket but I haven't found that info. yet.

No, I haven't registered on FL. I was thinking about it recently though. Every once in a while I read through parts of the forums there. It's a great source of information! The article about the Chevignon jacket that I mentioned above came up in a search on Google a while ago.

Yes, it IS a great source of information, although some of the people over there are a little bit too trigger happy and attitude-wise based too much in the 1940s. Mac's more to my linking in that respect.

I've considered joining various forums in the past, mostly relating to hobbies, etc. In the end though, Mac Online is one of the few I actually joined and I'm very happy I did. While reading many other forums on other sites however, I saw what you mention about attitude more than once and that was not something that I wanted anything to do with. I like it here because of how friendly everyone is. The good thing is, most sites allow one to read some of the info. without being a member so I do that once in a while.

According to the tracking info. the jacket is supposed to arrive today. I will post pics and write a review about it when it gets here : )

I once asked Gibson & Barnes for a picture of the back of their "Raider" jacket, but I can't find them anymore. Judging from the pictures on the internet, their jacket is of higher quality than the one from Peterman. Then again: it's more expensive.

It's a very nice jacket. I have one that's a few years old. Honestly, the quality of it is top notch. Few jackets these days come close to any of the jackets that Gibson makes. One thing that makes it different from the others is that it's very heavy. The others, especially the ones that are the closest to the Chevignon, are pretty light jackets. This includes the Schott. I'll post some pics of the Gibson, including the back, in about an hour

Here is a close shot of the collar. One can see how it has a larger square collar rather than the nice folded over triangular shaped one of the Chevignon. Even when broken in, this collar will never lay like the Chevignon because of the cut of the collar itself.

Matt, you're a star! Thanks for sharing those pictures! And you confirm my impression that the G&B jacket must be heavy, unlike Mac's. That's why it's not at the top of my list.

You're welcome Oops, I forgot to post the weight. The Gibson weighs almost 8 pounds (or 3.6 kg) while my Schott G-2 weighs around 4 pounds (about 2 kg). The Gibson, while definitely heavier, does have a nice fit. It isn't bulky or anything like many of the heavy leather jackets are. That being said, it still isn't anywhere near as form fitting as the Chevignon or Schott versions were. Size will obviously play a part in the weight too. My Gibson is a 38 regular and the Schott is a 40 regular but since the sizing was different 30 years ago, the Schott is actually much smaller and fits me better, haha. A size 44 Gibson for example, would weigh even more than mine.
