Frankly, in the whole season, MacGyver's coolest hair styles was on the first season (Especially in the early episodes).
Mac in the first season, especially in the first episodes, brown-haired. Next, became more and more long-haired and blond. (and eventually resemble the hair style "Duran-Duran", typical 80's)
Season 7 is where Mac comes with the worst hair style, in my opinion. Mac look old and tired in that season. (In fact, RDA's appearance in Star Gate, where of course he was older, very cool with silver-colored short hair. In my opinion, RDA's appearance in Star Gate, is still very reasonable to portray the character of MacGyver. )
From the hair style, switch to the matter of shoes:
Once again, the first season, where Mac is often performed with brown ranger boots, is the best style of the entire season.
What is disappointing is the episodes that featuring Mac with the sport shoe. What kind of special agents who wear sports shoes, jeans, with Duran Duran haircut?

Mac wouldn't be Mac without the mullet. A crew cut just wouldn't fit him. And he doesn't look old at all in season 7. Tired maybe, but it was clear everyone was.

What kind of PI wears a baseball cap, a brown tank top, a blue shorts, shoes without socks in a club with a certain dress code and drives a Ferrari?
In other words: Those were the days.
Clearly you like Mac's first season look. Well in that look, I have this thing for his sunglasses.
But I like his later looks and actually I always liked that seven season look. If it comes down to haircuts, I'd always go for that one for me. Now I took one a couple of weeks ago, now it looks like the first season.
And shoes? Also the later ones, most likely the ones in season 5-7. Those combat boots things.

I always preferred the season 7 hair style. Season 1 was kind of no-frills, just hair. Then he started going for the overly-moussed/hairsprayed mullet, but in Season 7, it looks more natural. That's how I used to always try to style my own hair.
As for the clothes, I preferred the earlier seasons, when he stuck more with the brown leather jacket and khaki pants. Never much cared for the flower-print shirts and jeans of the later seasons.

An off duty one. An under cover one? *shrugs*
MacGyver was only a part time agent in the first season, after that he moved with Pete to the Phoenix Foundation at which point he was no longer a government agent.

I had a mullet once. But back then it was just called "long in the back". I think it quickly evolved into long everywhere, kinda like a rocker or something. At least I hope it did, don't seem to have any photos from that time. Heh.
Mac had some wild hair styles a couple seasons, that's for sure. But I think the only time his appearance irked me was ::drum roll:: season 7. What the heck was up with his cloths? Who was dressing like that in the early 90's??? Black leather vest and white shirts? He looked like a biker dude dressed up for a wedding or somethin. O_o
Did anyone know, what is actually Richard's original hair color?
Somebody posted an explanation about the hair color change, and if you dig around the board, you might find it, but as I recall, one of the producers told Rick that his brown hair looked like "s--t on a stick," and they asked him if he would be willing to get highlights to lighten it a bit. But then they went too far, and by season 7, he was actually blonde. Even though I liked his hairstyle in season 7, the blonde hair seemed wrong to me. Mac never struck me as the kind of guy who spend time coloring his hair. However, I don't think that we were supposed to THINK Mac colored his hair. I think we were supposed to believe he was a natural blonde, which is why when they did flashback scenes to his childhood, they usually hired blonde kids to play the young Mac (I think the only time they used a brown haired kid was in "Phoenix Under Seige.")

And let's not forget the fact that he also had a tendency to button the top button of his shirts, which was just really odd.

I guess he was more dressed up like that other dude with the motorcycle in the 50's. The kid who didn't like to go to school and owned a garage, hanged out with Richie, Ralph and Potsie in Al's. It appeared that person became the producer of one best shows ever in the 80's.

I used to do that too.

I don't see how it was suppose to be a Fonzie look. When I think Fonzie I think black leather coat, not vest. And the buttons? No, not Fonzie. He'd probably call a guy who did that "square" or something.

Well, white T-shirt, jeans. Sounds like him alright.
Not making excuses, just trying to look at the positive points of season 7.
Besides that outfit already made it's entrance in season 5.
