Augh, I'm just so angry right now!
(WARNING: Yope is about to rant. Something she rarely does, but, boy, when she does LOOK OUT!)
Most of you probably know I'm homeschooled through a private and excellent school that is located in Chicago, Illinois. Being homeschooled, our schedule, though strict, is still rather flexible and we're usually finished with our curriculum before the school deadline. Most of our curriculum is of college standards yet my sisters and I are still straight A students, and have been all our lives.
Today is our mother's birthday. We stopped to get a card on our way to pick her up from work this morning. While we were searching through the vast variety of birthday greetings, an old woman (I refuse to call her a lady because of her behavior which will be revealed soon) came up behind us and accused us of "playing hooky". Naturally, I was insulted, as were my siblings. I began explaining to her that we were homeschooled. "Oh, that's a crock!" she scoffed. "So you go out shopping instead of doing school." She pointed a ringed finger accusingly at the cards we had picked out. She went on and on, bashing homeschoolers. Now, I've been told I'm a very patient person and I always try to reming myself that everyone has some good in them. i tried explaining but she wouldn't open her ears. My sisters and I glared at her back as she left. Oh, how I wanted to mouth off right then and there! These words rang through my mind. " Excuse me, ma'am, but you are obviously oblivious to the facts. You, ma'am, are uneducated on the subject and shouldn't be talking down something you know nothing about. Our school happens to be one of the most prestigious Christian Academies in the Tri-State. Our material is college material!
Eighty to ninety percent of the public school system's students have failing grades, are dropping out, are on drugs, committing suicide, smoking, drinking, partying, having sex; we don't! Because our parents raised us in a Godly atmosphere and kept us out of and away from the trash of today's society!...
(and so much more ranting)." Fortunately, our parents had taught us better and we held our tongues. Someone that stupid doesn't deserve an answer. I should've ignored her and not even tried explaining in the first place why we were there.
When we got to the checkout, the same witch (I'm being nice right now) was still running her mouth. To the cashier this time. Go ride away on your broom, my thoughts shouted.
There are so many things I'd like to say describing her, but Jesus wouldn't like it and I know I'd regret it later. I'll probably regret this later too, but I just had to let it out. Who knew such kindly looking old lady, someone whom you might picture as someone's favorite grandma, could behave like such a witch? One thing I CANNOT stand, is people who run their mouth and they don't know beans about what they're bashing. Mouth open, nobody at home. I would have been ecstatic if she had asked me or my sisters any college level question. How I would've reveled at the thought of her expression! Old, gossiping, nosy biddy...
*takes deep breath* Okay, I'm done now. I apologize if that was a bit much. It looks as though I've written a novel.

You should have put her in her place. I'm a great believer in putting people straight - especially when they have no idea what they are talking about.

I think if people were more up front and direct and said what they meant the world would be better off. Certainly there would be a lot less stress and a lot less mouthy people around.

I was also home-schooled. Had some issues every now and again, but I was almost always with my Mother, who didn't take crap from anyone.

Trust me, I understand. I deal with people daily as I work in a customer service field. I know exactly how rude people can be.

I could tell you horror-stories... but, you eventually just learn to deal with it. You'll meet people like that no matter where you go, how old you are or what you do for a living.

As my sister would say... you can't fix stupid with duct-tape, but it will muffle the sound.

wink.gif Hope you feel better by getting it off your chest. I know that kind of thing sucks, but you'll feel better tomorrow.

Lol, I like that. I feel better now but was really steamed up earlier. It takes all kinds to make up the world. XP

Unfortunately...

I don't think it was posted here, but there's a really inspiring post Tony Lee made on Facebook a few weeks ago about how he was bullied in school for being a geek. Tony Lee worked on the MacGyver comics. I have a lot of respect for Tony Lee after reading that.

I can post it here if anyone is interested in reading it. It should be shared anyway.

I know that feeling Yope; it can be so frustrating wanting to answer back! mad.gif
While studying and after my studies, looking for a job in which I can use my (rather unusual) education, I have worked in a store and had to deal with my share of people who think they know everything. It seems like some people have had a really bad day and think it's OK to let it all out on others who happen to be passing by. Fortunately, most people I have met through my job are nice!

Once I did actually lose my temper. There was a small difference between the price at the shelf and the sum that came up at the checkout counter. A woman did not like this and went on and on about how stupid I was. (I considered informing her that I have completed five years of university studies. dry.gif ) I changed the price right away but she gave her version to the customers in line and I snapped at her. She went to my boss who understood how I felt. This happened years ago and I quit my job for other reasons. smile.gif

Unfortunately there are people like that all over. Some people have nothing better to do than to complain about something they know nothing about. I was not homeschooled, but someone once told me:
If it feels good to say it, you probably shouldn't say it.
If you had that would have been 15 minutes of your life you won't get back.

The fact you say it was an old woman says enough. Plenty of old folks out there who are intolerant towards younger people. We should respect them, they can respect us too.

Some people don't have anything better to do as stated here. Just forget it happened, you'd probably never see that woman again.

I've brushed it off as just one of those things, and I actually now kinda feel sorry for her. She probably doesn't have anyone to talk to and probably lives alone. Like the poor folks in the nursing homes. I always wanted to do something to help put a smile in their day. Originally, I was training Dixie to be a therapy dog but she proved to be a higher drive dog more suited for outside activity.

If I ever do see her again, I'll probably wave and smile just for the heck of it.

I don't care how old or lonely a person is, it doesn't make it any more acceptable. Until they are told that the behavior is not acceptable they will continue to think it is.
