Ok, today my teacher gave us an assignment. We each have to do a power point presentation on a hobby. The teacher told me to get off MacGyver Online, when we were doing some in-class research for our hobbies. I explained that MacGyver was my hobby. The teacher told me that I would get a 0 if I did my assignment on MacGyver.
After a small argument, I had explained to him that MacGyver fans are very dedicated, and I won! My subject is now "MacGyver Fan-Girling".
My demonstration of how dedicated I am probably helped...
Me: "Ok, you ask me the hardest MacGyver question you can think of."
Teacher: "Ok, in the... 4th episode, what did he make?"
Me: "Oh yeah, the 4th episode, he made a lot of things!"
Teacher: *started walking away to help someone else*
Me: *yells across the room* "Including smog bombs!"


One of the other girls in the class overheard me talking about Mac and said he was some ugly old guy, to which I replied, "You want a fight? ...I have an army!"

Yep, don't mess with Mac Packers, just like you don't mess with Trekkies!

And how do you exactly plan on doing this presentation?

Unless the teacher is a MacGyver fan - which clearly he isn't - you could have said anything in reply to his question and he wouldn't have known any different. What a half-wit.

Not to mention the ignorant attitude he's subconsciously teaching everyone in his class.

Nah, he's ok. He just doesn't think that any tv show is a hobby, well he does now. At least he knew what the show was, unlike a few people I know.

I agree with Teach - I don't consider watching a TV series a hobby either. A pastime, divergence, entertainment perhaps .... but not a hobby per se. On the otherhand, macqyvering, collecting Mac garb, collecting Saks, incorporating Mac inspired courtesy/goodwill/role modeling into your everyday life ... would definitely qualify as spinoff hobbies derived from watching the series.

My argument is how much of my life I devote to the show. I mean, I am a moderator on here, I travelled across the country to meet Richard Dean Anderson, Michael Des Barres and Dalton James follow me on twitter, I fight to do my assignment on it…

And besides, he did say “or something you like.”

I rarely use my twitter account, as I'm mostly on Facebook. I have, though, been using my twitter account more often since RDA is on there, so I'm following everybody. MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

See, I wish I had been more of a MacGyver fan when I was in school. I would have loved to do an assignment on him (or the show)... you know I mean. lol

But she never said watching the show was her hobby. She said being a MacGyver fan was her hobby. Which includes traveling across Australia (approx same distance as traveling across the US) to meet RDA recently and also moderating in these forums. Which all comes under what you termed "spin off hobbies"

If doing fan related stuff is what you spend most of your spare time doing, then it's probably your hobby.

I usually don't argue with the teachers but I had to for MacGyver! That's my hobby and I'm sticking to it!

Ok, MacGyver Global is blocked at school, but MacGyver Online isn't. I need the history of MacGyver, and I need it right here, any help would be appreciated!

Not sure what you're looking for. What kind of history do you need?

What do you mean by history?

Maybe the origins of the show? I'm not really sure, the teacher said we need to have the history of our hobby.

If you mean by background, the MacGyver Background Bible maybe what you're looking for... however, there are some inconsistencies about Mac's past (like how he and Pete first met, etc, etc). It's got some pretty good insight though.

This site has pretty much everything you need as far as in-depth information.

Huh. Not sure if it would satisfy the requirement. But I'd think about going into your personal history with the show, and how it led you to consider it a "hobby", rather than the history of the show itself.

How MacGyver became to be?

Well you can start by saying that Lee David Zlotoff came up with the idea for MacGyver. A show about a regular guy who does extraordinary things with everyday stuff. In the meantime Henry Winkler was looking for a show after rounding up Happy Days and along with the late John Rich he became the executive producer from the show that was going to be called MacGyver. After writing the first script actors started to auditions and a man named Richard Dean Anderson was asked to do audition. When this man asked if he could use his reading glasses for the audition the producers knew they found their guy because the way he asked it gave the character that extra touch they wanted.

That's a part of how the show became to be.

I was kind of thinking along the lines of the whole 'hourglass' story. I don't know if you've read that, it's over on MacGyver Global, which I can't get on.

To me the history of your hobby would be the history of how it became your hobby. Your history with it. How,when,why you started and what you've done with it but you should ask your teacher for clarification.

It seems odd that Mac-Global would be blocked by your school, unless they are blocking wordpress.com, which is where it's hosted.

You could try using a proxy to bypass it. Try going to this site and typing in the mac-global address in address panel.

You should double check with your teacher. I'm pretty sure he will be asking for your history, as in how did you get started doing the hobby.
