So, we've got a thread dedicated to "gearing up" like Mac, one on his watches, the Bomber... Let's look at his luggage:

In season 1 and 2, he frequently uses a "Gladstone" bag:

And from the looks of it, the bag has seen some adventure:

I'd love to have one of these bags, but I doubt that all the stuff I take on vacation would fit in there...

What other kind of luggage did Mac use? Have you got any pics?

Regards, J.W.

I always figured: 'What a big bag for a microfilm.'

But those are really old fashioned suitcases. Or maybe something doctors carry around. Imagine someone walks up to him and asks if he's a doctor carrying that thing around? But maybe indeed a good cover for carrying top secret government documents.

You know in The Wall when Mac and Maria arrives back in the States, Mac is pushing a cart which seems packed with suitcases and I think Maria was carrying two when they met in East-Berlin and knowing Mac would only carry one bag... it seems a little weird why that cart was so packed. And if I'm not mistaken the top suitcase was blue. I don't see a guy like Mac carrying a blue suitcase.

I always assumed all the luggage on the cart was Maria's. wink.gif

Perhaps it was a tongue in cheek reference to women packing lots of stuff as compared to a man who packs very little.

I've been looking for the right Gladstone for some time now. They are rather expensive or they are really beat up, more so than I'd feel comfortable carrying "microfilm" in.

Wouldn't that be Maria's luggage? Was she moving to the US or just visiting. If moving lots of bags makes perfect sense.

In The Endangered we see him turn up on the plane with a big hiking backpack.

She was moving but I think she wasn't carrying that much when she met Mac in front of the hotel. Plus she arrived on her own, so there is no way she carried all that stuff by herself.

If she arrived on her own it must be her luggage. Who's else would it be? You don't carry other peoples luggage when you travel.

Yes, they start quite cheap on ebay, but some of the final prices, especially with the really nice bags, are phenomenal.

For me, a Gladstone would never be enough as a holiday bag: I could fit all my clothes and toiletries in it, but with all the other stuff I take on vacation (books, laptop, camera and required cables etc.) it's just not big enough. Mac didn't need these personal things of course, when he was on a mission.

So I'm looking at Filson's medium Duffle or Pullman right now, as they might be the right size for my needs and still keep some of the MacGyver-feel.

And about the microfilm: Mac had that in the inside pocket of his jacket...

Fellow Traveler, you're right about the microfilm.

I was thinking about the computer disk he took from Fernando Marin, which he hid in the bottom of the lining of his Gladstone and then transferred to the inside left pocket of his jacket when he got home.
