You know in a lot of episodes, like The Challenge for instance and other episodes set in that area, I've seen mostly on the background a sort of public transportation like busses but on the roof there seems to be some sort of extension like you see on trains to connect with the cables above.

Are those busses running on electricity of some sort? An early attempt to have public transportation run on green energy or something? Is that kind of transportation still in use? Just wondering.

You can clearly see it when Larson's hoods are chasing Ray down at the start of the episode.

Well there actually are buses that run on electricity from the cables above them, just like trams do. Can't find a clear good photo from one but trust me they exist, I have seen them with my own eyes.

Vancouver does have some trams, so I would say that's what you see in the background.

OK, I've found it in English Wikipedia - it's called Trolleybus in English (funny thing is that in Polish and in English pronunciation is 100% same :-) only spelling is different) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolleybus

I've never heard of, or seen them before. But I just checked and Vancouver has over 200 of them running on 13 routes around the city.

SO it's most likely that what you see in the background shots of MacGyver are these trolleybuses.

That system attached to that bus looks flat out dangerous. I can understand electric for things that run on rails, but not like that. The idea of stringing bare electric wires all over a city seems pretty questionable.

Yes, they're still used in Toronto and Philadelphia as well. I rode them for many years in Toronto - really a smooth and cool ride although sometimes they overload and cut out when too many cars get on the same line together.
