Actor Patrick Macnee, star of The Avengers TV series, has died in California at the age of 93.

The Briton, best known for playing John Steed in the 1960s television spy series, died at home with his family at his bedside, his son Rupert said.

Macnee, who served in the Royal Navy during World War Two, also played roles in theatre, appearing on Broadway.

A statement on the actor's website read: "Wherever he went, he left behind a trove of memories."

He died peacefully at his home in California's Rancho Mirage on Thursday, Rupert said.

RIP Steed! Read 'Blind in One Ear' a few years back ... highly recommended for all Macnee fans.

P.S. .... if you haven't seen his defining series 'The Avengers' .... do yourself a favor and catch a few episodes. He(Macnee) was not unlike MacGyver in being a secret agent and, of course, major thinker in outdoing the bad guys/girls.

My favorite episode was from season four .... 'A Surfeit of H2O'.

I'll always remember him as Count Iblis from the original "Battlestar Galactica".

I could never get in to Battlestar Galactica .... everytime I saw Lorne Greene, I heard horse's hooves clip-clopping away.

Macnee was fantastic in the Avengers. His iconic role.

Check out The Sea Wolves, too. A very good film based on true WW2 happenings.
Filmed on location in Goa.
