Because he created the character. Didn't you ever wonder what might have happened? Why he left the show? You know you should read the interview of Jerry Freedman, the guy who directed the pilot episode. After everything I read I'm surprised MacGyver got his 7 seasons. Every beginning is hard, I know. But according to Freedman they were about to kill each other by the end of the production. As of what I read I think it was bad enough that Zlotoff left and that Freedman asked to take his name of the pilot and change it to Alan Smithee.
http://themacgyverproject.blogspot.be/2015...nversation.htmlAnd I remember writing something here on the forums a little while ago after reading something about on how MacGyver as a concept was just simply lying around when some parted ways. I think the producers took their chance and made it something their own. I can't remember when or where I wrote it here or what it was I read. Maybe it was on the macgyverblogspot, the Downing interviews perhaps. But I recall something about it was just lying around and they somewhat decided to go through with it themselves without Zlotoff. I'll have to go through my message history to find it though. It sure gave me a different sight on things, that's for sure. For as far as I know he seemed to understand what made MacGyver popular at least according to his letter three years ago.
http://macgyverglobal.com/2012/11/04/lette...or-lee-zlotoff/I think he damn well knows what makes MacGyver popular and maybe if he would get his chance we might see some of the MacGyver that was intended in the first place. He created the character, so he must've had some vision on it. Maybe he had other and maybe better plans with MacGyver than what we got in the end even though the Winkler-Rich-Downing team gave the best they had but Zlotoff gave them the basics.
Zlotoff receives credit in every episode at the beginning. It wasn't until the internet came along I found out he had nothing to do with the show. Don't you guys ever wondered how to show would be like if he stayed on board during it's run. Would've we gotten our 139 episodes or more? Do you think we could've made it to 8 seasons or would there only be 6? Would season 7 been that lazy?
Maybe you are right though about that overseeing consultant to keep an eye on things. That wouldn't hurt. That's why I said in the other topic why not get Zlotoff and Downing together and have them talk. Zlotoff as the creator of the character and Downing who led the production of the show. How much better can you get it? Of course if it's possible and if they get along.
I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.
