Nothing against the new show, and I wish it all the success in the world. I have a feeling that a good bit of the 80s "innocence" will be gone, and it will be considerably more violent than the originals, pretty much the way television has gone with everything these days. I am in agreement with MacsJeep on her point. There aren't enough paperclips, duct tape, and chewing gum in the world for me to buy that kid as Macgyver! On a different note, perhaps this new series will introduce a whole new generation to what it is that makes us love Mac. I know my boys love the original. Just my .02 worth. I'm going to give it a go and see how the pilot is.

I know it's a hard pill to swallow .... that is ... younger generations rising to the top without (seemingly) earning their due stripes. But it's happening more & more in society these days. It's a part of evolution. You see it in Dotcom millionaires, politics,, you see it everywhere in 2016.
Pro hockey is now full of teenagers coming in to and dominating a man's game. Unheard of even a decade before & where they would have been banished to the minors, dumbedown and forced to punch their ticket to the big leagues. Not that way anymore.
I'm just saying this as a precursor and in anticipation of a 'baby face' coming in and being a hands on know-it-all, problem solver, all worldly mucky-muck. Because that's essentially what we are going to see in this. Hard to swallow for some, but more & more the reality, real life thing these days. \

I have decided there is only one way I can approach this and accept it - pretend it's not actually MY Mac. I'm going to tell myself he's Mac's grandson, he's not replacing the version I love so much, he's just a continuation of it...
Sam would be what about 44 now? So not an impossibility, and then (in my head at least) it won't matter if this guy and the scripts are nothing like the character I've come to love. I can seperate the two and they can each be their own entity.
In a way, I wish they'd gone that route instead of the whole re-imagining thing. So much easier to accept when they're not messing with original canon!
And to answer the hair question, SHORT please!!! Someone posted a picture of Lucas on the Facebook page without that floppy mop, and he looked much better. "Floppy mop & goofy smile" photo makes him look like he's something off Gilmore Girls, not an action hero!
I think that was why I didn't accept Jared either, he looked too young with that hairdo! (And no, I'm not Jared bashing now, I like Jared, and have had the pleasure of even meeting him! Wish I'd have thought to ask about Young Mac, but I was kind of in awe at the time)

I think it's more accurate to say it's an alternate universe MacGyver. That's really what this is, if you think about it. Mac is going to be about 25 years old in this, right? But it's going to take place in 2016. So it's clearly not replacing the original Mac, it's just a Mac in a different fictional universe. That's why they're calling it a reimagining. It's like how Batman Begins wasn't supposed to be seen as a prequel to the Michael Keaton Batman films, it was just someone else's take on the character, keeping some familiar aspects, but changing others.

Yes it's someone else VERSION of the character. SO there will be (oh at least there should be!) plenty of familiar elements of the character but some new stuff thrown in.
Difffences, preferences aside. Do we all agree that if the MacGyver 'general concept' inspires even 1000 young minds to focus their education/career in this reboot - that it/we are all big-time winners?

That's my hope Joe. I know the original has pushed my oldest to seek a degree in Engineering, and he now loves Physics. My youngest already loves mechanics and math.

Exactly. I expect the four main things they'll keep are Mac's aversion to guns, his ingenuity, his adventurous spirit, and his desire to do good. Granted, that's all a bit vague, but it really was the essence of the character. Beyond that, I'm not so sure what they'll keep. I don't know if we should expect side characters, such as Jack Dalton, to be a part of this new Mac universe. For now, I'm telling myself they won't be, but if they are, great. I'd just rather not set myself up for disappointment. Pete seems like he really should factor into the new show somehow, but it might not happen until later in the series, and if the show doesn't last long, we may never see him.
I'm just genuinely curious to see how this turns out. A part of me is quick to write it off as the sort of show that will flop and disappear in about 5 weeks. The less skeptical part of me says, "Hey, 'Hawaii 5-0' worked. And 'Gotham'... which is similar in the sense of being a prequel that doesn't directly tie into any existing version of Batman... turned out well, so who knows." Keeping my fingers crossed.
You wonder if the SAK still has the same magic it did back in the mid '80s. I mean it does for me but Victorinox never really regained their sales post 9/11. They've bridged the gap with luggage and watch sales though. What will the younger generation think when 'Mac' whips out his handy-dandy multitool in this day and age filled up with such a plethora of techno-gadgets. As much shock and awe and curiosity as back in the day? I don't think the answer to this is such a slam dunk as one might think. I showed my sak collection to a whole crowd of youngsters recently and they collectively did not bat an eye. My drones on the other hand, they were totally bananas over. We want SAKS, but we don't want yawns or this series will be done after 10 episodes.

That's true Joe. All the world seems to go ga ga over the Spyderco series. I wonder if the 111mm knives might do the trick? Thanks for the attachment....I'd make the trip just to be NEAR one of those stores! Someday I'd love to tour the Vic and Wenger plants. You're right about it...if the show turns the new crowd off, it will be history.

He''s got the double-jointed facial mojo thing happening a la RDA - that much is for sure ... probably is what got him short-listed. Some actors 'have the look' and yet are so stone-faced.

Well he doesn't look like this all the time. There's plenty of other pictures of him where he's both smiling and happy looking. Don't judge a person by one photo.
Having said that in most photos there's still something "off" about him to me, but again these a still shots and we are viewing them with no context. I'm curious to see what he will look like for the MacGyver role.
In the context of the character his look might be right. Maybe a 20 year old MacGyver is more cocky and sure of himself. Humility is usually something we learn on the life journey. In season one MacGyver was a little more edgy and cocky and then mellowed out later on... if we follow that progression he would have been an obnoxious little.... in his 20's

That is a good point... Most people that young are usually still growing and learning. Heck, I was a mess in my 20's and things didn't start to make sense until I hit my 30's, and by that point, I started to grow up. I still have my moments of stupidity, but hey... nobody is perfect. lol
If you want to get a good idea of what Mac was like, just watch Partners... wasn't he supposed to be in his late 20's in the flash backs?
I don't have an issue with Lucas Till. I checked out some videos of him on YouTube, and he seems like a nice enough guy. I'm sure he'll be just fine as MacGyver. He's got my stamp of approval.

The link doesn't work anymore, though. I haven't seen retweeted the pic anywhere (don't have an instagram-account, so I'm not sure about there), but I guess the lady got into trouble because of it.
I had it posted on a Movie Forum on Facebook and was able to save the pic later (although the quality is not the same anymore because of its reduced size).
But here it is:

All the above are very valid points and you are all entitled to your opinion.
However CBS are making a NEW show based on the character MacGyver. They are starting from scratch creating a new backstory, a new world for the character to explore. It is only right that the 80s series and RDA's incarnation stays in the past, including all characters and back stories etc.
By CBS starting from scratch it makes previous backstories and characters non-existant. For me that's the correct course of action - because you start the audience on day one - afresh. It also stops old fans trying to spot discrepancies with timelines and events written by writers who were probably not even born when MacGyver 1.0 aired.
In the new series, Lucas Till should play the character his way. Bringing his own style and flair to the role. RDA did a marvelous job playing MacGyver. No one is denying him that. No one is disrespect his portrayal. The series he was involved with was with another network by ABC and concluded in 1992, it's over.
Lucas, has been asked to bring this unique character to life again. A very rare opportunity. This is Lucas's time to shine. Let's give him that opportunity. And who knows, MacGyver's father has been mentioned as a key backstory plot, perhaps CBS or the MacGyver production team may have their sights set on introducing this character, with RDA making a guest appearance in the role (as a compromise to the old loyal fans). At this point everything is open for discussion and even RDA has said (if approached) he'd consider a guest role.
This my friends, are exciting times for the MacGyver brand. We should be embracing this reboot with open arms. Not only are we getting a TV series but Loingate are collaborating to make a big screen version also. We should not look to dismiss this, before at least watching the pilot. CBS is home to The Big Bang Theory, Mike and Molly, Persons of Interest, Elementary, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Good Wife, Hawaii Five-O, Limitless, NCIS, and I could go on. Adding MacGyver to this list should be a welcome addition. This new series of MacGyver seems to have a strong cast, good writer and now a good editor on board. I hope CBS prove the Skeptics wrong and that all fans are pleasantly surprised when the reboot finally airs.

Good! Because I'm still working on Mac's official timeline and I did not feel the need to find discrepancies with the new show.
I'll give Lucas my blessing after I have seen his X-men performance. If that convinced me I'm okay with it. RDA is okay with the reboot and takes no offense in it and said his MacGyver days are over and that MacGyver belongs in the 80's and 90's.

Glad to see the excitement level picking up for everyone. Macgyver is a character that I always felt could go toe to toe with Bourne Bond etc. and like those characters represents a spy figure that isn't beholden to any one era ( even the creators played around with this concept having Mac in the old west and Medeval Europe and in comic book form and now telviosn form our own time) I am extremely excited about this and I think still could be fantastic as Macgyver is he my first choice no of course not ( I had no idea who he was and he was on no one's and I mean NO ONE'S radar before he was cast) but I am warming to the choice and hoping the show gets picked up and lasts 7 seasons like the original (giving us a chance to see Mac grow from a young spy into the mature spy we know and love) I like the intrigue the pilot has based on the script review and we never had a best friend of Mac become evil I kind of would love to see it (plus having Gunner if he becomes evil constantly call Mac angus to get on his nerves would be hilarious and nice change of pace)
Like I said I am gonna give the show a shot while many feel it's "rushed" right now we don't know how long people like Henry winkler have been talking about this. If I am not mistaken Macgyver is his most successful show same with Lee David Zoltoff so both want the character to succeed again and who knows clearly hey have tried and failed before maybe they learned from the mistakes of the past and are moving forward...
The only thing that has me worried in the video it's clear Till is wearing a similar shirt Jared Papadacki were in Macgyver (2003) so that has me worried slightly but hey with that pilot the issues were apparent (lack of an insteresting villain and the whole characterization of the nephew was I don't know slightly off like he would have the exact same aversion to punching someone as his uncle really then the fast food stuff really then the music sigh)
This feels different though like they are really trying... Anyways like I said I have seen every episode (at least once though I plan on finally rewatching a few of the goofier ones I haven't seen in a while like good knight Macgyver) I have read the comic beat the mobile game and have seen the pilot of Young Macgyver and the 2008 and 2012 commercials so I am quite happy that Macgyver is coming back.

Lucas Till did a Live Q&A today (4 hours ago) on Twitter for the new X-Men Trailer. He does have longer hair than MacGyver in Season 5... Don't like it :-(. He posted some Videos, too (if you want to see for yourself): https://twitter.com/lucastill
Some Fans asked about MacGyver, but so far he hasn't answered...
