Yes, having the same target audience is what makes these ratings so interesting.

For Season 1, the more the reboot ratings kept falling, the more the audience numbers for LSM were growing. It looks like a lot of LSM viewers checked into the reboot pilot and subsequent episodes, then started flocking back to their "old" show. They still might have watched both, but chose to watch LSM live like they were used to.

Now, it seems the contrary: After checking in on LSM after it came back after a year-long-hiatus, the people seem to go back to MacGyver. The reboot is growing its audience again while LSM keeps losing viewers. Haven't checked the DVR ratings for LSM, but it's possible that LSM viewers flocked over to MacGyver (and maybe "Hawaii Five-0" as well) last year when LSM was off the air. Then they went back to check it out but decided it wasn't as good as before or that they would DVR it instead.

Dragonfly 2

I am not happy about this title. That means at least 5 weeks for a Mac centric episode. I really am not a fan of concentrating on secondary characters leaving Mac with little to do. My least favorite episode of season 2 is Riley episode 2 followed by Bozer at spy school. While I have rewatched season 2 several times, never that 2nd ep. and rarely the 3 with Bozer's narrative. I think sometimes the writers/producers believe the title is Team Phoenix and not MACGYVER

It's the network scorecard. I know, when we discuss ratings in the episode threads, we often compare different networks and MacGyver against LSM or other shows in the same timeslot.

When it comes to renewals/cancellations though, you should compare shows within the same network.

Here's the CBS scorecard at the moment; showing the demo episode averages for the current TV season. Some prediction websites say that shows above the network average are certain renewals. Of course, CBS won't cancel all the shows below the average at the end of the TV season (since there's quite a few; 14 shows in the darker grey area to be exact). They also look at ad-value, audience numbers, syndication appeal and other stuff.

I find it interesting. At least Matty gets some development since the dragonfly episode. And Ethan has a daughter? Oops.

Ugh. I have zero interest in anything to do with Matty's life.

I actually think she pulls the show down with the nasty over the top Napoleon complex all the time.

By tolerating something we allow it to continue, grow, breed and after a while it becomes normal and before we know it MacGyver is giving Jack low and high fives for shooting people.

Come Friday night, MacGyver will be airing the tenth episode of season 3 and it is a Matty Webber showcase like no other. Earlier this season, we learned via a file named Dragonfly that this long-secretive character has a husband named Ethan. Now, we’re getting to see so much more of his story. Ethan has spent the past several years undercover for a mysterious organization known as S-Company, but what happens when information leaks that there’s a mole in their midst? Can Matty and the Phoenix Foundation find a way to extract him before his life ends? These are the questions that this episode looks to answer.

In leading up to this episode, the woman behind the Matty role in Meredith Eaton spoke to CarterMatt about when she first found out about the Ethan twist, displaying a personal side to the character, and also the fascinating connections that exist now between Matty and MacGyver. Rest assured, this is an outstanding episode with a great performance at the center of it that you do not want to miss! (This is also part 1 of a 2-part interview. CarterMatt – When were you first approached about this idea of Matty having a husband that nobody else knew about? We’ve talked in the past about Matty being the keeper of secrets, so when did you find out about this one?

Meredith Eaton – I know that they had been wanting to explore Matty’s past and give a little bit of a peek behind the curtain of what makes her tick for a while. I think what they wanted to do was first establish Matty as a matriarch to some of the Phoenix heroes and then once that was established and people realized that Matty has good intentions — you never really know entering each episode — we could move in this direction.

Early on this season there was talk about Matty having a husband so I knew a little bit, but then it sort of went away and I found out when I read the script for the Dragonfly episode. That was when I was like ‘oh! okay’ and it was solidified.

Did having this bit of information change at all how you played the character? Did you approach anything differently?

I think it just added a layer for me in terms of my intention and why Matty is who she is. It definitely brought some information to light for me; it added a lot of different crayons for me to color with. I’m very in-charge and I don’t personalize things as Matilda Webber, so it added a vulnerability that I never had an opportunity to show before. I had to figure out how to do that but then also not be vulnerable because Matilda Webber is never vulnerable in her occupation.

It was challenging and exciting and I was so happy to be able to show some different dimensions.

I think one of the reasons why MacGyver is so attractive as a show to a lot of people is that it mixes this action and humor with the softer-more personal moments with this group that has become a family. Like you said Matty is someone who doesn’t often let her guard down, but are some members of the team going to be able to get through to her after she learns that her husband is in danger?

Yes. In particular, Mac. The Matty – Mac relationship is really important to me and it becomes really important to MacGyver. What the audience is going to see is a deeper understanding that Mac has of Matty’s private, more personal struggles and his epiphany of her having to deal with things behind the scenes while he’s been dealing with his own similar struggles with his father. That’s a real parallel and it could become a real bonding moment between the two characters.

Want are you the most excited for viewers to see from this episode as a whole?

I’m excited for people to see different sides of Matty. I’m not just the boss of the Phoenix Foundation; I’m also a person and there is a humanistic quality to her. She’s loved and she’s lost and there’s a deeper pain that she’s been suffering from quietly. Some of that motivates her attitude and her perspective on things.

The writers have done such a beautiful job here because I think back to my very first episode on the show when I’m interviewing Mac and I’m saying to him ‘I’ve lost operatives and I’ve seen what this job can do to people.’ In looking back now, realizing her own husband had to go into the field and she lost that relationship with him, you see the realism of the type of job that they’re involved in, and how that plays into the person that she is.

CarterMatt: What was your first reaction to reading the script for the episode and seeing everything that Matty goes through? As an actor I’m sure it’s complicated. It’s devastating what happens to her, but at the same time the material for you to play is fantastic.

Meredith Eaton – I’ll be totally transparent — when I read the script I didn’t sleep for days because I was like ‘wow.’ This was quite the opportunity and I put a lot of pressure on myself as a person to do the best job that I could. The writers trusted me with such complexity and this role is one of the most challenging ones I’ve ever portrayed because of that. There are so many different layers to Matilda Webber.

It’s devastating. The audience is going to be left with their hearts in their throat – I was left with my heard in my throat. It was up and down and back around again and it’s heartbreaking, but the challenges I faced in shooting this and hoping that I did the writers proud … I hope the audience takes away a different understanding of this character and an admiration for her. She has gone through so much love, loss, and pain and really still tries to do the best she can at her job without letting any of that get in the way.

What was it like going back and playing these different flashbacks into Matty’s life? It was a chance to see a totally different side than we’ve seen from the character before.

I loved being able to show a lighter, fresher, happier Matty — a young Matty in love with the whole world in her hand. The electricity between Matty and Ethan is special. We shot the first flashback scene and it was one of the coolest scenes shot on MacGyver. They really gave Brendan Hines the coolest entrance — it reminds me of Deadpool when he’s coming through the door to KC & the Sunshine Band. It was just magic, and you never know if it’s going to work or it’s not going to work, but those scenes were so fun to play because I don’t normally have that opportunity — and wearing a wedding dress, though my real husband didn’t love that too much (laughs).

Where do we go from here?

I don’t know. That’s the thing — I haven’t been told yet. Anything is possible.

Are you interested in seeing Ethan again on the show down the line? Obviously the romantic side of things has concluded in this particular way, but there are still a number of interesting dynamics to explore here.

I think it would be fascinating. There are so many different ways that could get mileage and be maximized. He is such a charming character and there is a lot that could be shown — and of course the circumstances of him now being married [to someone else] and having a child. What would that look like if they did work together again? I think that it could prove for a whole world of possibilities.

And, he’s very likable as a character — that’s why Matty fell in love with him so instantly. There was a real charm and pizzazz about him. I think there could be a lot of interesting storylines if they choose to have him on the show.

So did you go to the writers after all of this and say ‘can I have a happier love interest now?’

Not really. After three seasons I have such trust and faith in our writers — they flesh things out really thoughtfully. I hope they’re going to take Matty in a really great direction and if that includes a love interest, fine; but, it’s not on the forefront of what’s important to me. What’s important to me are the scenes where we see the relationship between Matty and Mac, because that’s such a primary relationship on this show. Those are the types of scenes I really love.

Are there any scenes in this episode that have left an indelible mark on you, and you’ll continue to look back on them while playing this role moving forward?

Definitely the scene with Mac was one of those prominent scenes for me. It shows the audience how bonded these two characters have become. Then, there’s the scene where Matty sends Ethan off to Mumbai — it’s really important because you learn that she is responsible like he is for making that decision that changed the course of her entire life. What would have happened if she did not give him the go-ahead? Would Matty have had children?

Then, there’s the scene of watching Ethan reunite with his [new family] and the pain that she swallows, realizing that she never had that opportunity to have that life and seeing how that impacts her in present day. Those are the types of scenes that I think about now in filming episodes, because that is what has molded Matty into the person that she is.
