'MacGyver' Season 2 Promises Bigger Action, New Team Members Ileane Rudolph September 28, 2017 2:00 pm
MacGyver’s Mac and Jack (Lucas Till and George Eads) continue to battle baddies with every gadget imaginable—including a contraption that resembles a Ghostbusters jet pack—in Season 2 of the hit 1980s adventure series reboot. “Think of any hostile environment around the world,” Till says, “and you’ll find the guys there in their famous Phoenix Foundation plane.” Eads confirms, “Fans should look forward to bigger action this year!”
Where are we going to be in the new season? Till: Cuba and Turkey. Into catacombs and underwater. All kinds of crazy stuff. Eads: We are in the middle of a pretty sticky situation, fighting for our lives in a C-130 military plane as it’s about to crash-land on a homemade igloo in Siberia, then trying to survive by fixing up a broken snowmobile.
Mac and Jack allowed evil assassin Murdoc (David Dastmalchian) to escape in last season’s finale. What will they do about it? Till: He’ll be back in some capacity within the first four episodes. You’ve got to keep someone like him around! He’s like the Joker, and Mac and Jack are Batman. Murdoc’s hidden son will figure into the storyline this season too.
The guys were searching for Mac’s long-lost dad. Are they still? Eads: It’s a thread through this entire season.
Fans desperately want it to be the original Mac himself, Richard Dean Anderson. Till: We’d love to have him on. We’re also open to the idea of it being the last person you think it would be. Kurt Russell would be great. That would be quite fun. Anyone else new that we’ll meet? Eads: There’s a secret new team member. And [tech whiz] Riley’s [Tristin Mays] dad will be revealed. Till: That’s the guy who Jack beat up [off camera] last season for being an abusive father. But that’s all we can say!

Oooo... a Murdoc episode? Nice!
I'll admit it... I'm a David Dastmalchian fan now... XD I saw him in a short called Love is an Elevator, and it was adorable.

Because they've been filming in Cuba just recently, I never thought this would feature in the first Episode already. Opening Gambit, maybe?
Well, I like David and I really hope he manages to get to film more than just one episode (he has been seen on set) and mentions and appearing on screens and photographs.

I think it's great that this show seems to be expanding on it's theme, growing as it goes along. There are a ton of possibilities as long as the writers remain fresh and open. I always thought it would be interesting if Mac had done a Cuban, Chinese, or even Japanese episode. The world has changed since then, so who knows where this will go?

MacGyver boss: Mac's father won't be played by Richard Dean Anderson
MacGyver is always a man on a mission, but when season 2 picks up, his mission is a bit more personal than usual: He wants to find his father. “The search for his dad is going to play over the course of the whole season,” executive producer Peter Lenkov says. And yes, fans will eventually meet Mac’s father, though Lenkov cautions that “it’s not who you think it is.” Although Lenkov is still campaigning to get Richard Dean Anderson — the original MacGyver — to appear on the series, he says making him Mac’s dad would be “too obvious.” As he puts it, “I’d like Richard to come back in a more surprising role.”
But finding Dad won’t be Mac’s only concern in season 2, especially considering that Murdoc managed to escape from prison in the season 1 finale. “[That rivalry] will be ramped up this season,” star Lucas Till says. “Murdoc’s the only one who can make him angry.”
Fans can also expect a continuation of the Cairo story — which Lenkov claims is “even more crazy than the first part” — along with the introduction of Riley’s father. In other words, everyone gets daddy issues in season 2.

‘It’s A Fun Way To Hit The Ground Running’: George Eads Wastes No Time On ‘MacGyver’ Season 2 Premiere
Revamping a classic show like MacGyver can be a lot of pressure. George Eads, who plays Jack Dalton, partner to Mac (Lucas Till), will be the first to tell you about the “tossing and turning” he did during the simultaneously exciting and petrifying production of the show’s first season. But after the show’s successful first year, George is feeling more comfortable and adventurous. George spoke to CBS Local about what we can expect from tonight’s premiere, how he’s inspired by his family and co-stars, and why Lucas Till’s ability to memorize a complex string of scientific equations impressed him so much.
CBS Local: Season 2 of MacGyver premieres tonight. That’s super exciting. How was shooting this season different from the first season?
George Eads: With the first season of any television series, especially before it airs, you’re not really sure what you have. There’s a lot of heads in the huddle and a lot of people who think they know the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. You’re really trying to throw a bunch of spaghetti at the wall and see what sticks. I felt the pressure of knowing that we spent hours remaking an iconic show, one of my favorites. And then once it comes out, you get a sense of your character and what’s going on. You get to look at it from the third person. It helps. I used to not watch that much of myself. But I’ve been watching, studying, and kind of seeing how I can make Jack evolve. I’m bringing as much of my personal experience to the role with my own father who passed, as I give advice to Mac about his dad. I’ve got a three year old little girl, that changes you as a man. And you know, I’ve been away from her, which is kind of a cool source of drama for me when I need to get serious. You know, you just think about your three year old little and the drama seems to comes pretty easy. And comedy comes pretty easy with Lucas [Till]. Lucas is a pretty good dude and he’s a funny and fun guy. He wants to do a great job. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves not to repeat ourselves and make it as good as possible.
It sounds like you’re really coming into yourselves with season 2 and focusing on how you can top yourselves rather than living with the pressure of the original series.
GE: It’s the truth, man. I tossed and turned and didn’t sleep a lot last year. I put a lot of pressure on myself to not only do a good job, but, you know, this is another go-around with me and CBS, and CBS is banking on me to deliver. Having that pressure relieved, you’re able to ease into work and be looser and more relaxed. I know that if improv some scenes, they’ll go for it, whereas last year I wasn’t so sure if I should think outside the box. Creative lead Peter Lenkov has been an awesome guy to work for. He encourages us to go for it and we have been. The feedback has been tremendous.
Mac and Jack’s bromance is still going strong. How do you and Lucas keep the magic going on and off the screen?
GE: Me and Lucas are just good friends. It starts with respect. When you spend as much time as we do on the set with one another, he knows how hard it is for me, and I know how difficult the show can be for him. We try to pick each other up, bring each other a protein shake, or take a break if one of us needs one. There’s been times when I’ve been missing my daughter so bad that I’ll be in an emotional state, and Lucas will hold up production until we can talk it out and maybe even cry it out in the trailer. I confide in him as a close friend, and I think he’s done the same for me. I’ve gotten to know his mom and dad and his brothers. When you spend a lot of time working, you cross your fingers that you’re gonna like each other, and we’ve just been lucky when it comes to that. And the more our friendship evolves, the more our characters do too.
The team is in Cuba on tonight’s first episode. What kind of action can we expect in the premiere?
GE: In the teaser alone, there’s a huge fistfight. We find ourselves in Cuba. There’s an introduction of a new character this season, Isabel Lucas, who’s gonna be coming on who’s fantastic. I love when you catch Mac and Jack in the first of an episode trying to get out of a tight spot from a mission and then going into another one. Instead of the show starting in the war room with a mission, we find Jack and Mac mid-acquisition or mid-mission, already in a pickle. It’s a fun way to hit the ground running. I know a lot of shows take a while to pick up a little steam, but ours tend to make a splash right away. It’s a fun way to keep everything moving forward. Hopefully that hour flies by and you go, “Wow, it’s already over.” That to me is a sign that you’ve got a great show. I think if you look at last season, a lot of our episodes are really rewatchable, and you kind of get more the second time around. I think a lot of people find themselves watching them twice because they’ve missed things the first time.
What’s been your favorite MacGyver problem-solving moment?
GE: So many! The thing about for me, if I speak and think like Jack, Jack’s impressed with his creativity, impressed with the fact that he doesn’t believe in guns. He uses his creative mind and his smarts to get out of these situations. You’re definitely going to find him making things out of paperclips. But at the same time, he writes a scientific equation on a window in front of me. I was marveled that Lucas could remember that and do it, and at how hard he had worked to get everything locked down well. To see him perform it was probably one of the most impressive scenes that I’ve seen so far this year.
We’re looking forward to watching the new season. Thanks a lot for taking the time to talk.
GE: I’m really humbled, it’s going to be fantastic. Thanks a lot!

A lot of CBS is an enigma Dash. Their actions don't necessarily make any sense whatsoever. I still say I'm liking the whole Cuba thing though! Tons of possibilities!!

sooooo... a reboot of The Heist episode...
Yes, most likely!
There's still no Press Release and no Stills yet (which is weird). All I know is that there are some Russian bad guys and a pile of money in a vault involved.

A little warning: Apparently, they changed the episode order. This Friday will not be the Casino Episode (that initially was episode 2x02), but the Mustang Episode (initially Episode 2x03: Muscle Car + Paperclip).
That's why they deleted the preview on YT. Now, there's only a generic trailer from last season for this Friday.

They probably changed the order because of the recent events in Vegas.
Yes, that's what I thought as well.
I don't think the previews revealed the locations, but I guess since it's a Casino Episode there's a good chance the main story will be set in Las Vegas.

CBS reposted the new Opening Title today.
Nah. Still not feeling it. Too generic and like any other modern TV show. Feels more like "Person of Interest" or "CSI Cyber" to me. Also, we have like 4 different logos now (Production Logo with the SAK in it, Social Media Logo, Season 1 Opening Title and now Season 2 Opening Title Logo).

are they are so completely out of original ideas that they are now rehashing individual episodes??
Apparently, that's not so uncommon with Reboots. Lenkov did it with "Hawaii Five-0".
Also, a lot of fans have been asking about using storylines from the original show. So far, I've seen the most requests for a Casino Episode and for an Ant Episode
I don't mind it too much as long as it doesn't happen all the time.

Presumably they will put a fresh spin on it, so I'm fine with that. That's kind of the nature of a reboot, taking ideas from the original and reworking them in a new way. It's funny, though-- when the show tries to be different, people complain it's not enough like the original, but then when it takes ideas from the original, people complain that it's too much of a rehash.

I guess that's the curse if you do a Reboot?
So far, no one has complained about Mac ditching is leather jacket and there were only minor complaints about Mac cutting his hair . But I've seen quite a few complaints about Samantha Cage yesterday and that Mac didn't have enough screentime.
There's already a few people harping about Mac please NOT dating Cage. This will get interesting for sure. Think they're already writing hate letters to the studio?

I am sure Peter Lenkov has heard from fans regarding Agent Cage on Twitter and Facebook. Some on twitter seem to like her, but the overall response has been negative.
I don't think having a new character is the issue, I think the issue is how they introduced her. She appears to be taking over for Jack and looking like a love interest for Mac. She resembles Jack and Nikki way too much.
Some say she was introduced to take the strain off George and Lucas, which makes sense.
I would be happy if she had scenes like in the beginning last night interrogating a suspect, but not have her in much of the episode. Once she entered the picture last night, the episode became awkward.
