I thought there was a thread on this but apparently not anyways what topics would you want the new show to cover

A few of my thoughts

1. The Dark Web: yes this term gets overused a lot but I recently watched a documentary on youtube and learned no action show has portrayed the dark web accurately as while there are disturbing and dark parts of the dark web there also Educational and essential historical information out there on the dark web, and there are decent sites on the dark web (as well as proper forums and honest people) it would be interesting for Macgyver to show the light and dark side of the dark web

2. Our obsession with reality tv: Oh yeah I know what everyone is thinking "put Macgyver on teen mom give me a break" well hang on initially I thought of an idea that Jack Dalton tries to start his reality tv show "Jack's Adventures" but films something he shouldn't and has to turn to Macgyver for help. Plus considering the amount of shall we say "pushing" the producers do to guarantee violent reactions from people so viewership can be increased on shows like teen mom etc. might be interesting to see Mac handle that

3. Another episode on the supernatural: ok so the original show wasn't afraid to tackle UFO's Ghosts and big foot honestly I would love for the show to explore those concepts a bit more... No, I don't want Mac to create his proton pack or swim with the loch ness monster, but the idea of Mac in the new show being confronted with the supernatural would be kind of cool

So those are my three to get the ball rolling how about you.

Simply stated: global problems. New versions of old problems because they evolved. Though I wouldn't say dark web but internet terrorism might be a nice topic for the new show. Push the button and everything is erased and the power is out. Even though in the old show MacGyver dealt with something alike in Easy Target. But internet terrorism is a good topic.

Further I liked the old topics in a new jacket: political/terrorist acts, environmental causes, endangered species programme, fair play... Lot's of those topics are still hot, maybe even hotter than in the 80's and 90's simply because we didn't learn anything. The one thing they can skip is the troubled teen preachy stuff.

But the one thing I don't see happening right now is the new MacGyver going solo. Taking the car on a roadtrip to a place he's a total stranger and help out the people there with no mention or sight of other characters like Bitter Harvest or The Visitor and many other episodes. I think that's also what made MacGyver MacGyver.

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.

I thought CSI Cyber made an effort to talk about the dark web. Too bad that was cancelled. I could see a good Crossover on that one.

I agree Dark web should be covered.

Also, the gay thing could be addressed........ The last few seasons of the original did address "issues..."

Cyber Security should be addressed.

Definitely the Edward Snowdon thing should be addressed......

Privacy.....

I could go on and on....

I'd like the show to be more action/adventure oriented than the original was in the last three or four seasons. I'd like Mac to be first and foremost a government agent who goes on dangerous missions overseas but is shown occasionally dealing with environmental and social issues. But even when he's dealing with pollution or troubled teens or whatever, don't do it like a heavy-handed after school special. Keep the thrill and intrigue going somehow, make the villains' motivations more realistic. I certainly don't want to see consecutive episodes based around the Challengers Club.

Thanks. biggrin.gif It's good to see this community is keeping an open mind about the new show. Most IMDb users are so pessimistic and hateful and don't give stuff like this a chance.

Thank you, and about making those "issues" episodes more exciting, think of how the X-Men comics and movies handle social issues while being interesting and fun. There is a way to work stuff like that into a show without being heavy handed about it, which unfortunately I believe the original MacGyver was. It didn't feel like it belonged, it was the equivalent of the edutainment video game Mario Is Missing. Meaning, the show became window dressing for an educational tool, where the entertainment factor became secondary to the learning/informative aspect.

I am a fan of the original, but frankly, I hated how those "very special episodes" began to dominate the show starting in the fourth or fifth season.

My favorite season was always Season 1. Although i liked the later seasons, the character was most dynamic in his first and the gambits were incredible. Made it exciting.

I was never a fan of the preachy episodes and to be honest I don't think they are needed at all.

If I want to be educated I'll watch a documentary which covers the facts and available options otherwise entertain me.

I don't think any fictional show can give answers to real problems because the universe they are set is set up to make their answers work. i.e. MacGyver always has what he needs to do the MacGyverism they want him to do, or they always catch the bad guys... real life isn't' like that... so don't preach to me, just give me 60 minutes of fun and entertainment where I can forget about the real world.

Well, as I said, I think there are ways of handling issue-based plots that make for better quality television, and I at least appreciate that MacGyver is characterized as a socially conscious person and genuinely good as opposed to a James Bond type where you wonder why such a jaded man even cares about saving the world.

Yep that's true.

I don't mind stuff being incorporated into the story lines, but just don't preach it to me.

I think the old show got a bit arrogant with those episodes actually, so I wont miss that in the new one.

I totally agree - that's something I really don't want to see as much of in the new show. Yes, we need to see Mac cares, but first and foremost I'd prefer the reboot to be like the earlier seasons of the original. smile.gif

Agreed my hope is that they use the original show as source material but keep it closer to the first four seasons if we have a handful of Mac as Mr Rogers episodes fine but I would prefer more espionage stuff

In terms of over arching stories

Season 1 introduce the characters Mac dealing with the betrayal of Deborah (guessing that wil be the name) and finding out about a sinister orgnization

Season 2 dr Zito and a zodiac killer scenario where Mac and Zito play a cat and mouse game

Season 3 we are introduce to Hit and maybe one of the lower level people from the orgnization

Season 4 Macgyver vs Murdoc

Season 5 Macgyver vs Nicolas Holt (the man who in the original show trained Murdoc)

And that is all I have for now smile.gif

I totally agree with you.

I don't think we need to worry about it, though. The original show came out at a time when preachy "After School Specials" were still common, and almost every sitcom ended with a group hug and a moral lesson learned. So MacGyver fit into that landscape. These days, doing a show like that would look like a parody.

Also, I kind of hope this new version of Mac needs to occasionally make some questionable choices. Looking back at the original show, the character was a bit too perfect (and the writers always put him in situations where he never had to take a less than moral approach to anything.) I'm not saying Mac should turn into Jack Bauer, but I'd like to see a few situations in which he's forced to do something that doesn't sit right with his conscience. Watching him struggle with that sort of thing would, I think, make him a more interesting character.

Since gun rights/control and mass shootings are a huge issue right now and MacGyver is known for being against guns, I could definitely see that coming up a lot on the reboot. Maybe also delve into terrorism and Islamaphobia.

I had the same thought !

I can definitely hear the future President Clinton mentioning MacGyver in one of her upcoming speeches.
