It's probably not that mansion, but I got a feeling that mansion was used in The Godfather and The Bodyguard.

What I've seen so far is giving me pretty heavy season 1 vibes. I don't think they're going to just remake episodes from the original series but I expect quite a few homages. Maybe recreations of the iconic shots from the opening credits? Plus, it seems like they've rewritten MacGyver from the boy genius of the first pilot to maybe someone relatively more worldly and mature.
Sandrine Holt will play Patricia Thornton - Director of Operations at the DXS. I reckon she'll be referred to as Trish, just like they sometime shorten MacGyver to Mac.
I had seen this coming, as Lenkov did a similar move on H.50, when he cast Grace Park in the role of Kono, originally played by a man called Zulu in the original series.

Pete's role replaced by a female feels like a change to far for me. It's like a change for the sake of change or for political correctness.
The Mac Pete relationship was an integral part of the show for me. This is going to be a very big step to get over as it will greatly change the feel of the show for me.
Even my kids are saying it's wrong and neither of them are huge fans of the show, but they've seen enough episodes to know the connection Pete and Mac had.
Changing Pete to Patricia is really pretty irrelevant to me. I wouldn't say it's a good choice, a bold choice, or even necessarily a bad choice. If anything, maybe they felt it was the safest choice, because it's easier to just borrow the name "Thornton," and not have to worry about finding somebody who can convincingly be a younger version of Dana Elcar. If they had a "Pete Thornton" in this show, there would be a lot of expectations about how he should look and act. By making it "Patricia Thornton," those expectations are gone.
Based on what we've seen so far, it seems that Jack Dalton and Thornton are those characters in name only.

I'm also not really convinced yet. While I don't mind changing male characters into female ones in general, the Mac-Pete relationship was the most important of the original show (heck, those two were the only regular characters in the opening credits after all). Even without any sexual hints, the relationship between Mac and Patricia Thornton will be totally different (e.g. age-gap-wise or the fact that the show seems to rely on the Mac-Jack relationship). So I don't really get why they "borrowed" Pete's or Jack's name just for the sake of it if they create totally different characters anyway....

to calm a few fears from everyone
1. Jack Dalton actually was CIA in the original show ... Sort of watch Dalton Jack of spies I believe is the name of the episode... 2. To be fair I wanted Wesly Snipes for Peter Thorton so I am just as guilty in terms of changing something for the sake of change (though that is because my number one choice Michael Chiklas is stuck on Gotham) 3. And just because Patricia is being introduced doesn't mean Peter can also be introduced again remember as far as I can remeber there is no mention made of any other living relatives in the original show so maybe Pete had a sister who did the same job lol.
Like I said I will watch a few episodes and decide how I feel about it like I said I don't mind the changes thus far because like I said without viewing the final product I can't determine whether it's a good show or not lol hoping a new preview will be out next week.

Jack was CIA for like one episode and not very professional either. I think they wanna make Jack an experienced CIA agent instead of the scheming get-rich-quick pilot we all knew and love.
Michael Chiklis as Pete is an interesting choice, though.
The best way to watch this is, is looking at it with a clean slate. I'm not going to hang around too much in here because, I want to be able to see it with a sound mind. So Jack is CIA, Wilt Bozer is part of the team and Pete Thornton becomes Patricia Thornton. To me that's fine. Right now, I think the less I know the better, than I won't be disappointed in the end.
Even if they can live up to the expectations, they'll never beat the original because they just can't. They can make a (near) equal but they can't top it.

If it's true and Pete has been replaced by a woman, then that's not something I can get behind. Sorry, but if you're going to bring back a character... at least stick to the original character in some fashion.
There's a lot of the reboot that is still a hard pill the swallow, and I've tried to be very unbiased towards it. I've seen things I don't like, things that have bothered me and I've kept my mouth shut.
But, Patricia Thornton? Really? *grumbles and sulks in a corner*

Lenkov has done an excellent job in recreating a classic series in H.50. As the seasons have gone on, it has only gotten better and better. The ratings prove my point.
And he will no doubt do it again, if not better than the original - with MacGyver. He has a fantastic team behind him, of dedicated and hard working crew in every department.
I agree with you MacGyverGod, this should not be compared too the original. This is a new show, a new take, a re-imagining, and the more we forget about the past, the better we will enjoy this new series.
At the end of the day, we can always dust off the original box set DVD's and re-watch them, if we don't like the new series.

I think it sounds better than a nephew of MacGyver we never heard of. I think the main reason is Pete was a side character. Besides his wife and son there is no mention of any relatives at all. If it is as a sudden daughter, that would be more difficult to accept but as a niece I can agree with it.
It's funny how I can agree with one thing from one character but not with another thing from another character that actually is the same.

Not really. He got involved with them in one episode because of his courier business. He discovered he was transporting stolen documents and informed the CIA who wanted him to keep doing it for the bad guys while they (the CIA) tried to catch them.... not exactly what I would call a trained CIA agent like this new Jack is suppose to be.
It's difficult to envision Pete as a female character, nor would I be able to imagine any actor playing the part of Peter Thorton.
Who will best suit for the role of Pete? Despite everything, I still would have preferred for a male to play the part and not a female. In any case, it doesn't really bother me at all.
But then look at how successful the female character M in James Bond became... traditionally only a male played this role. The new MacGyver series will have to stay in tune with modern society where women stand more and more in powerful positions. A point to ponder?

So how much does Peter Lenkov pay you to be his spokesperson?
Seriously, though, I agree with you that it's best to just see this show as something new. That's why, in some ways, I think maybe they shouldn't have even bothered naming these characters "Jack Dalton" and "Thornton." They're clearly not those characters, but by giving them those names, it naturally makes us compare them. And for people who are very attached to the original series, those comparisons will usually be negative.
I think it's entirely possible for this show to be better than the original. But even if it is, I think plenty of people will still prefer the original simply because it's what they grew up with. MacGyverGod had mentioned that the original show can't be topped, but there have been many tv series since the 80s that HAVE topped it, so I don't really see why this one can't top it, too. But it will never hold the nostalgic value that the original held. When I watch episodes from the original now, I can clearly associate them with specific memories of my teenage years, and that makes them more special than they really are (for example, I have no idea why, but I still remember the first time I watched the Jimmy The Eraser episode was the day before a parent-teacher conference at my junior high school, and I remember being a bit nervous while watching the episode, wondering what my teacher would tell my mother.)
That's one of the dangers of doing remakes. They're often an attempt at nostalgia, but the real nostalgia can only come from the original.

Pretty much how I feel right here... It's just one of those things I'm gonna have to accept, I suppose. Just let me grumble a little bit... So far, I'be been pretty accepting and I haven't said much because I didn't want people jumping down my throat for voicing my concerns. Doesn't mean I've written the reboot off completely... just means that I'm leery that they even get the whole reason why the original was popular in first place.
Hint: It's not the action... =P

Just let me grumble a little bit...
Let's grumble a bit together
I guess I'll have to wait until I've seen a few episodes before I can comment about this change. For me, it also depends on the reason. If they sat together in the writer's room discussing the pro's and con's and arguing about why it is a good reason to make Pete a female character, fine by me. If they did it because some one of them always wondered about Pete being a woman *lol* or - and that's my problem - if they just did it to lure the female audience in by stating "hey, look, here's a hot young successful business woman in our male-driven action show" (so stop whining about all the cancelled tv shows with female characters as the main heroes), then no, I'm not ok with it.
Because Pete wasn't a young, hot-looking guy. So why does Mac need a young, hot-looking woman as his boss in the reboot? This screams "possible chemistry and love-triangle problems" to me, and I don't want that *grumbling some more*.

I can assure you Miasma, I don't need to be paid. As a producer myself, I can appreciate talent when I see it.
I have also been the most consistant on this forum - never changing my stance or view on this reboot since it's initial announcement.
Nostalgia is a personal affection to the past. It evokes personal memories specific to each and every one of us. The original MacGyver had those memories for me too. It's a personal thing. So your absolutely correct, this new program won't have the nostalgia vibe like the original had, because it's a personal thing, program makers don't have a crystal ball with the ability to tap into everyone's subconscious.
But what they do have is the ability to create a new MacGyver show, that can create new fond memories for me and for others.
And who knows, those Easter eggs (nods to the past) Lenkov is known to put into his reboots, may evoke those nostalgia moments again, at least for me anyway.
