As for switching up Peter for Patricia - there were the same fandom grumblings about Kono on H50 and she turned out just fine.

She's actually one of my fave characters on H50, especially in the early seasons.

So, I figure, if they do the character justice, it won't be a big deal that she's a woman instead of a man.

Just because you don't get something doesn't mean it's not there. You do seem to have a more superficial perception of the show than many of us here.

It would have been nice to cast someone in her fifties, though. Why does MacGyver's boss has to be a hot thirty-something?

Not that I have anything against hot actresses but I am a bit tired about so many TV/film roles going to young model-type actresses instead of "normal looking" actresses with a more "life experienced" look; especially if the role is a woman in a higher position (you need years of education and experience to get there, so why shouldn't this be someone who's older than barely 40?).

And before anyone starts complaining, the same goes for New Jack Dalton. Being a modern TV show, of course he's going to look like he belongs on a magazine cover... Sure, nice looking fellas draws a bigger audience in, but I kinda liked the fact that the (male) cast of the old show didn't look like a compilation of GQ-models...

Well, if Mac is younger, it would make sense that the Thornton character would be younger too.

I never saw a father/son relationship between them either. They've always just seemed like really good friends to me. I guess people are seeing the father/son thing because of the age difference, but I can't think of any specific things that Pete did that were more "fatherly" than "friendly."

I don't think the age difference makes that much of difference either. Pete was in 50's and Mac was in his early to half thirties. There's too much respect for each others boundaries and besides they won't get along in the long run because they're both loners. As if Pete was such a joy to have around with his broken legs in Out in the Cold or when Mac came home from the hospital in The Negotiator.

No bad mouthing Pete here though because he seemed genuinely relieved when they found Mac in the avalanche and the teary eyes in Passages just the same. I think by the time Passages happened, MacGyver would've appreciated Pete's care and concerns but there still would not be anything fatherly about it. He would appreciate it nonetheless but the series had grown more by season 5 than season 2. Season 2 was supposed to be funny with them annoying each other in Out in the Cold, I don't think they would do that after Passages. I think they would just grow closer.

I kind of agree with you. I recently started watching Hawaii 5-0 (after all this talk about Peter Lenkov, I was curious to see his work), and while I do enjoy it, I think I'd enjoy it more if not everyone in the main cast looked like a model. I just find it easier to relate to characters who look a bit moer like regular people.

As for Sandrine Holt, she's 43. Considering that MacGyver will be in his early 20s (I guess), I think 43 is sufficiently older to make her seem like an authority figure (and most likely not a love interest), so I'm fine with that. Isn't that about the same age difference that there was between Mac & Pete in the original series?

EDIT:
I just realized that I've seen Sandrine Holt in "24." She played Evelyn Martin in Season 5 (Martha Logan's personal aid.) Based on that, she'll be a very different version of Pete, but I think it could work out fine.

A program like MacGyver is their to be enjoyed for a bit of escapism. And to be entertained. Not to be watch and dissected scene by scene into its subtext and semiotics.

Plus, I don't think I'm the only one who didn't pick up on the father/son relationship thing. Which I still believe didn't exist.

I don't mind using my imagination, and bend reality - but farcical things like that whirlwind punch - I think we can leave back in the 80s were it belongs.

Let this be more a more serious action show than that - I don't want it compare too MacGruber

Might be a nice tribute though. Open a door, guy walks in and unexpectedly is getting whirlwind punched. But just once will do. It won't work as a running gag. That's the one-punch fight with or without shaking the hand afterwards.
