QUOTE (Avilos @ 29 July 2016 - 01:38 AM)
My questions for him would - Did him giving CBS approval to make a new MacGyver series end his say on it? Now they can do whatever they want. Or has he decided to just let do want ever they want and he is going to collect the money?

Good question.

I suspect we'll never know the answer.

I know he withdrew the movie rights from New Line Cinema when they failed to deliver so I guess even though he's given them the go ahead he's still the owner at the end of the day and he can take them back if he feels the need?

But that's purely speculation on my part.

On RDA's decision not to appear on the new show.

This kinda sounds indeed more as if he's referring to the unaired pilot as Dash pointed out. Maybe he thinks they're still going in that direction. I don't think he cares that much about social media that he follows their every step. But like Kiwi said: it sounded misinformed. I don't think he meant it the way it sounded because like four months ago when I saw him in Ghent he genuinly supported the reboot, didn't take it as an insult at all but he also was like: 'Don't expect me to be in it.' I think there is more to it than we're being let on. No harm done here and to what I've read on Facebook a lot of people seem to support his decision as well and actually I do too. Well to be real honest, I couldn't care less if he said yes or no. The way this seems to be going attracted my attention more than enough to get interested, so... Like I said I support his decision.

RDA has decided to leave it alone, this means that at least for the 1st season they should came up with some sort of ideas on how to re-create the past or ignore it-

As for his mails, maybe the words that were used are not what everyone was expecting, but at the end we all got to understand, nowadays he is an old man (with all my respect) he might not have enough energy to play a key rol in a modern show, maybe they did not offer him enough or maybe they just want him to promote the show. Some ppl here wouldn't know the character without him, we should remember he was an executive producer of the 2 movies. Of course everyone may think whatever they wanted to but at the end without RDA Macgyver won't be as iconic as it is right now.

I disagree - I think Lucas Till, given half a chance - can equally make this character as iconic as the original.

We should all at least afford him the opportunity.

Lenkov has made H.50 better than the original, and I have every faith in him that he can do the same with MacGyver.

I don't think money is the reason. He was done with it. I think he's just also done with acting. I read in the comments on Facebook something about the people of the reboot trying to capitalize on his popularity by bringing him on board for their own advantage while he has nothing to do with it. If he suspected that, can you blame him for declining? He never wanted to be part of it.

It probably would have been better for him to just say that, then. If he had said, "Sorry guys, but I'm enjoying retirement way too much!" I think everyone would understand that.

RDA was NEVER about the money; and I'm very sure he didn't decline because they didn't offer him enough.

He was never an A-List-Movie-Star, but he still gets many offers for small roles because he's still a "house-hold name". He said on several conventions how his agent always berates him for not taking on any of the offers and doing something with his free time. If he'd needed money, we would have seen him on TV by now because there are so many TV shows out there with tons of extras and cameos available.

He did say recently he was thinking about starting acting again (now that he's daughter went away for college) and that he had fun with the small cameos he did; so I really hoped for some more of that. But he had a few years to get used to his well-earned retirement, so who could fault him for staying home with his dogs instead of spending your days on set (especially if you're dealing with residual pain almost every day).

I'm a little surprised here on some of the reactions.

I'm very surprised about the comments on Facebook - so many are happy about him having no interest in being part of it. I thought fans would enjoy seeing him again on TV; especially the RDA-Fans... I mean if you're a fan of an actor, don't you want to see him doing some more acting, whatever the part? And enjoying the promo stuff, articles and promo tour appearances? Guess I was wrong (or they're not as vocal on social media as the others)...

RDA is scheduled for 2 or 3 conventions in the fall, I'm sure people will ask him about it and he might share some more information...

No kidding! I love Amy Acker. I remember when she was on Angel. She's got a REALLY good acting range.

That is what is really baffling to me about this whole situation. I thought Lee bought the rights to have creative control for any new MacGyver projects? How did this happen?

Here's a quick run down of the rights...

CBS still (and apparently have always had) the TV rights. So no MacGyver TV show can be made/broadcast without their ok.

Lee Zlotoff owns the rights to MacGyver so no new MacGyver product of any kind can be made without his ok.

This means that in order to have a TV show both Lee and CBS have to come to an agreement, but anything else such as comic books, movies etc those fall under Lee's ownership so he can make and do whatever he wants with MacGyver...except make a TV show.

So yes Avilos, you were on the right track with your thinking. It's a mixed up wed of copyrights.

Copyright - like any legal stuff I guess - can get complicated really fast! laugh.gif

How did CBS end up with the rights to MacGyver? It was originally an ABC show.

laugh.gif That's awesome!

Although I do wonder if having actual scenes in the show with that missile might be just a little TOO blatant in the "Look! we're trying to be like the old MacGyver" department. If you know what I mean?

There is, after all, such a thing as trying too hard. But just as a publicity shot it's awesome.

That's actually what I thought about yesterday. Easter Eggs are nice, but I don't need them to cram in as many of them as possible into the first episodes.

I'm happy they cut Lucas' hair and put him into the leather jacket, but if they decide that it's just too hot in Atlanta right now to risk Lucas collapsing running around in it all day and let it go, that's fine by me. For me, it's more important that they catch the essence of MacGyver's character (I didn't get that at all in the Unaired Pilot Trailer).

I'm happy that they honor it, but I don't need new MacGyver to be an exact replica of the old show. After a few episodes, the show needs to stand on its own and I think it's inevitable that the longer the reboot goes on, the further it will differentiate from the original.

On the other hand, the executive producers are fans of the original show and who didn't ever dream about playing around with MacGyver's stuff? happy.gif (I'd probably do the same; and if you have the power to get other people to build props of your favorite tv show...)

After they moved to Vancouver to film the series, there is atleast this CBS television logo in season 3 DVD. According to Wikipedia, the distributor is CBS Television Distribution. ABC is the network who broadcasted the show, in my understanding.

If I'm correct, it's like this based on what I know.

Paramount Television produced the original show, and chose to have it aired on ABC. The network had no rights for the show itself, they just aired it. When CBS inherited Paramount Television in 2005 (I hope I'm correct), they automatically owned every single Paramount Television show produced, regardess of what network aired it.

A similar case to MacGyver's is Family Ties. Family Ties was produced by Paramount Television and was aired on NBC, but if you check the CBS website, you'll see they have episodes there and clips on the CBS YouTube account, just like how they have the episodes and clips of MacGyver.

Hope I helped happy_dance.gif

I'm guessing it's just a prop that features in the first episode. Of course, if Mac carries it with him like a teddy bear in EVERY episode, then we'll need to be concerned! haha.

Everyday, is like being at the Ambassador's reception... You know, yer'man who dishes out the Ferrero Rocher.

With these Easter eggs, pics and videos from the set, and now these big announcements... You're really spoiling us, Lenkov!

Sounds promising? I'm intrigued, what could they be?

I think the poison that was used was applied to this knife, passed to the mutton when it was cut and then activated by the wine. - MacGyver.

Ugh.

That just seems too try hard to me. It's taking the Easter egg thing a bit too far I reckon.

Kdding aside, I think it's clearly more than an easter egg in the first episode. An "easter egg" is something that's hard to find, but put there for the diehard fans to notice, and not relevant to the plot. This missile seems to be a major part of the first episode's plot. I'm guessing they needed a missile in the episode and figured that they might as well use the design from the old promo posters (so, I guess you could say its design is an easter egg, but not the missile itself, if that makes any sense.)

There was also famous pictures where mac was posing next to old door. Why don't they take those too and make him like he would be knocking behind door at somebody's home biggrin.gif

Yeah that's kinda what I was getting at. There's a difference between the subtle Easter eggs which nod back top the original and this.

This just seems too blatant to me.... like a "Hey look we're trying really had by copying the old MacGyver stuff you liked the first time so you'll like our show as well."

The other little nods to the original and stuff we've seen have been cool but this just seems to me like it's over doing it.

Makes me wonder if they're not just taking a whole lot of stuff from the old show and shoving it into this new one in the hopes that it'll make us like this show.

I reckon give some nods to tie it all back for sure, but let the new show stand on its own as well so it doesn't come across as a try-hard.
