Totally agree, I know they might be watching old episodes to came up with ideas but there are so many possibilities specially in the modern world that we live nowadays, they should focus on making a great show that will stand on its own-
That just seems too try hard to me. It's taking the Easter egg thing a bit too far I reckon.
Kdding aside, I think it's clearly more than an easter egg in the first episode. An "easter egg" is something that's hard to find, but put there for the diehard fans to notice, and not relevant to the plot. This missile seems to be a major part of the first episode's plot. I'm guessing they needed a missile in the episode and figured that they might as well use the design from the old promo posters (so, I guess you could say its design is an easter egg, but not the missile itself, if that makes any sense.)
Yeah that's kinda what I was getting at. There's a difference between the subtle Easter eggs which nod back top the original and this.
This just seems too blatant to me.... like a "Hey look we're trying really had by copying the old MacGyver stuff you liked the first time so you'll like our show as well."
The other little nods to the original and stuff we've seen have been cool but this just seems to me like it's over doing it.
Makes me wonder if they're not just taking a whole lot of stuff from the old show and shoving it into this new one in the hopes that it'll make us like this show.
I reckon give some nods to tie it all back for sure, but let the new show stand on its own as well so it doesn't come across as a try-hard.
*opinions subject to change after seeing the scene in context of the episode.
I think it depends on the angle they approached it from.
For example, if they came up with a story involving a missile, and then said, "Hey, you know what? Why don't we make the missile look like the one from that promo photo? That would be kind of neat nod to the original series!" I think that's perfectly fine.
On the other hand, if they said, "Hey, remember that promo photo where MacGyver is holding a missile? Let's try to come up with an entire episode about THAT!" then that's really contrived and, as you said, trying too hard.

How did CBS end up with the rights to MacGyver? It was originally an ABC show.
If I'm correct, it's like this based on what I know.
Paramount Television produced the original show, and chose to have it aired on ABC. The network had no rights for the show itself, they just aired it. When CBS inherited Paramount Television in 2005 (I hope I'm correct), they automatically owned every single Paramount Television show produced, regardess of what network aired it.
A similar case to MacGyver's is Family Ties. Family Ties was produced by Paramount Television and was aired on NBC, but if you check the CBS website, you'll see they have episodes there and clips on the CBS YouTube account, just like how they have the episodes and clips of MacGyver.
Hope I helped
That makes sense. I'm a little fuzzy on all the different acquisitions that have gone on in Hollywood over the years, but I figured it was some kind of Paramount/CBS connection. Thanks.

Yeah that's why I put the comment at the end. Can't really judge until we know how it all fits together.
I can see potential for quite a funny scene where he has to lug the missile into his room at night and gets caught by Wilt standing there with it slung over his shoulder trying to look innocent.
INT: NIGHT - DARK
Wilt turns on the light as MacGyver is walking past the doorway lugging a missile over his shoulder.
WILT "What the hell Mac??!!"
MACGYVER Stopping to look at Wilt with an innocent expression.
"What?"
Wilt points at the missile.
MacGyver turns his head and then jumps in surprise as he notices the missile he's holding on his shoulder.
MACGYVER "Where'd THAT come from??"
WILT Seriously?
MACGYVER Smirking as he walks off into his room.
"Yeah, seriously."
WILT Yelling out to MacGyver in his room.
"That thing better not be live man! I don't want no missile blowing me up. I'm too young and good looking to die!
MACGYVER Yelling back from his room.
"Don't worry it should be.... Uh oh!
WILT Appearing in MacGyver's doorway seeing MacGyver looking very concerned
"What do you mean uh oh? What uh oh?? Oh my God! That's a live missile isn't it!!!
MACGYVER Bursts out laughing as he throws the missile on his bed and turns to head past Wilt towards the kitchen.
"Relax fella. I'm kidding. It's plastic.
WILT Turning towards MacGyver as he walks out of the room and announcing with dead pan sarcasm.
Yeah, not a bad place to live at all! It seems like they tried to capture the feel of the houseboat (the wooden walls, the glass panel doors, etc), without actually redoing the houseboat.
I've been wondering if the producers are going to make Lucas hit the gym eventually. I know Mac has never been a character who relied too much on brawn, but the original Mac was a sporty/fit guy who could handle some extreme sports like rock climbing, etc, and looked solid enough to handle himself in a fight. Lucas doesn't look like he'd be so convincing in those situations. So will Jack always be the fight guy, while Mac is always the brains? Or will Lucas bulk up a little bit? It'll be interesting to see how they deal with that.
Speaking of Lucas, another thought crossed my mind: In one of the Comic-Con discussions, Lenkov said that they didn't set out to make this MacGyver a younger character, they were simply looking for the best actor for the part, and it turned out to be a younger guy. Is that really how a casting situation would work, though? Surely they didn't just invite people of all ages to audition. They must have had a concept in mind. And I thought they had said way back, before Lucas was even cast, that this would kind of be a sort of prequel. Or maybe I'm getting mixed up with the movie they had talked about?

Well, if this picture is any indication, Lucas will be bulking up

Yeah the movie is (or was) planned to be a prequel.
I think that was still some media spin from Lenkov because they were saying a Twenty-something MacGyver right from the first announcement of the TV show. Or it could just be his understanding of what happened is a bit off because remember he was brought in after all that had already happened.

I keep thinking it's a "club" thing? I dunno... I mean, how else would there be women with bikinis with assault rifles? That's not very... erm... practical, now is it? lol

yeah I though that but then the surrounding area doesn't fit for a club. I wondered if it was like some rich guys pool party demonstration type thing. Like he's selling the tank to the highest bidder type thing.
Maybe that's the party scene we saw with Lucas turning up in the flash car.

I think the pool party idea sounds more plausible actually. The ninjas and girls are just to show off the merchandise. Would make more sense, especially since this is MacGyver... he shows up as a potential buyer to find out who is buying the tank, and/or selling it.

Of all the stuff we've seen from this show, the bikini girls on the tank is still the one thing that makes me slightly nervous that they may be heading in the wrong direction. On other hand, since everything else we've seen indicates that they're on target, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and assume that this scene will make sense in the context of the show.

Kind of like in "On a Wing and a Prayer" episode, but it was actually opposite in that, when Mac and Jack were those "ninjas" to show off the merchandise...Bazookas

Since he's been filming the second pilot and appeared at SDCC, he's looked a little bigger to me than he did in the first pilot's trailer, so I'd say he's been working out for a while now.

But the ninjas were already there in the first picture of the baywatch tank (see below)
Uhm... to be honest, I didn't see them the first time around *blush*
Well, I did see them, but I didn't recognize them as Ninjas. Thought they were some crew people because why would there be Ninjas AND bikini babes on a tank? Not even FanFiction can come up with this kind of stuff - or maybe it can and they stole the idea from a fanfic?
