Denizen, I hear yeah!

But, it is essential that they build a team around MacGyver. RDA was required for practical every scene in the original and made shooting the show excruciatingly difficult, and very time consuming and unbearable for the actor.

James Bond has help, Ethan Hunt has help, and both are each central to the plot and have their individual moments of brilliance in solving the case in each adventure they get into.

What I am trying to point out is, MacGyver can still be himself, he can still work on his own at certain points, he'll just have a bit more support around him.

It's not that different to the original- often MacGyver relied upon Jack, Pete, Penny, Det.Murphy etc. But they'd turn up willy-nilly, and disappeared into the sunset. These characters were very one dimensional and hadn't much backstory or purpose, expect for that particular episode.

I believe that these relatively insignificant characters from the original series, will play a more central role in the reboot. The series will allow us to get to know and understand their relationship towards Mac and others. And together each will help MacGyver solve the cases week in, week out.

At the end of the day, this addition is central within the mix to mold and tell a better and diverse range of stories, allowing the writers more freedom to tell a better class of story, more direction, season arcs, plot points and twists, breathing longevity into the series. Something I feel that the original series lacked - entirely season to season.

Did they say they're not using the original theme?

No. I'm pretty sure the Music they used for the Panel-Clip was not the final product; they just needed something quickly.

Yeah, I've noticed people saying every time there's a new trailer or behind-the-scenes video or some other promo that the music in it might be the new theme, but it's common for temp music to be used in trailers because the soundtrack is produced after the movie or show is finished filming and probably after all the editing and special effects are complete as well.

While I love the original theme tune - I think done correctly and with the greatest of respect. Changing up the theme and modernizing it for the 21st century could be the way to go on this new series.

Here is an interview I've just found of a round table - at comic con - with Peter Lenkov and James Wan talking about what the new MacGyver Series will be like,

Sounds Amazing !

When i think of teams i think...

The failed Saint reboot (Still unaired but that trailer was horrendous)
Team Knight Rider (I cringe at the thought)
Knight Rider 2008 (Still cringing)
The Lone Ranger (Still with Tonto b ut making his character overshadow the Lone Ranger's)
The Lone Gunmen (3 Guys whose trio team crumbled the moment they introduced another 2)
Human Target (Watch season 2. I rest my case)
The Bionic Woman (Team Bionic Woman, more like)

I know "Bigger" names are involved behind Mac but i still have doubts. You grow up on something that just works and then new people come along and they wanna "Change" things. Because they feel it'll work better. But the Billion Dollar question is, will it?

Well I doubt it will be Team MacGyver. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that the lone wolf aspect was a weakness of the original series.

I believe what we'll see in new MacGyver, is him on a mission with his associates feeding him Intel or overseeing his mission and liasing with him.

Not too dissimilar to a scene in the original, in an episode called "Kill Zone" where Pete was watching Mac track through a forest of dead animals, looking for the crashed satellite.

Come to think about it, there were some great characters that only made a few or one appearance that could have been brilliant as regular recurring roles on the show. The one that springs to mind is Dr Kosby, from the episode Renegade, he worked in the lab at Phoenix. He was highly underrated and could have been a great asset to the show week in, week out. Especially for those comic moments to alleviate the tension with each episode.

Others that spring to mind is Booker from the challengers club, Nikki Carpenter, The Colton's and The sheriff from The invisible killer episode. All these characters could have had great regular potential, and would have added a lot to the stories and how they were being told.

yeah I think using the old theme (as in the exact one from the old show) would be wrong.

Everything else about the show is being revamped and updated and the theme should reflect that.

Like the show itself, the theme should be a modern version of the classic.

Well said.

At the Twilight ComicCon Panels, the clip they showed was mostly the exact same as it would appear in the finished movie. But that's very different because they had almost a year for post production until its release; and several months to put something together before ComicCon.

For MacGyver, they just started shooting what - 11 days before - and had to use entirely new material from the new pilot episode (maybe only shot a few days before); they probably had no time for a lot of post-production and had to use material without to much blue screen stuff.,

I reckon that if they had picked up the old pilot with the old team of David VonAncken they had finished in April, we had gotten something more elaborated; also the music for that pilot and all the ADR sessions and post production stuff would have been finished by now.

I think it's nice that they put something together at all so short notice; they could have made the panel and just put up some stills or character portraits.

Another Roundtable Interview with Lenkov and Wan. Lenkov talks about keeping the opening gambits (at 1.10min)!

So, maybe "Baywatch with Tanks" is the opening gambit? Or MacGyver dreaming because he fell asleep sitting in the tank, waiting for the bad guy to show up? *lol*

OK things that I have taken from the above Panel session (with Lenkov and Wan),

1. RDA involvement.

Peter Lenkov would love to have him involved. "You couldn't do this show without his involvement". It seems he wants to have him in the new show, in a very big way, not just some small cheap one scene nod. But to have him as regular cast member or regular guest contributor. "We want to establish it and really convince him to come join us". The ball is now firmly in RDA's court. So if he declines, it will be because of him, and not CBS.

2. The Show
I love how Lenkov spoke about the show. "We are coming out of the gate, with People who are very sceptical". He went on to say "We can't recreate the exact same show". He spoke about how he wants to retain the sole of the original, but introduce it to a new audience. Making the show similar to that of H.50, "A Popcorn Show" spectacular event television. Referring to James Wan, the director of episode 1, he went onto say "The man directed Fast and Furious, people are going to expected that type of action". We now know that this is no origin story, "that we'll jump into their world" and pick up mid-way through one of their adventures - "At a point were MacGyver has a Life-change" with characters that have known each other for a long time. Sounds intriguing and completely different to the original pilot of being stuck in an underground bunker.

3. Characters
I love how Lenkov spoke about possibly re-introducing certain characters from the original series and opening the door to other cast from the original show. I would love to see them introduce Nikki, Dr. Kosby, and Det. Murphy. And that's before even considering the villain roles...Murdoc, Dr. Zito etc. The mind boggles thumbsup.gif

James Wan added that "It all about the characters and once you have that chemistry right, the action, and the set-pieces are just the cream on the cake, that makes it all the more tastier"

4. The Opening Gambits and Voiceover
They are back, enough said ! happy_dance.gif

All this illustrates how positive, and how far this show has evolved (in a relatively short period), since the pilot (first look) promo. Kudos to Lenkov and his team.

So... is that why they were looking for another hand double this week? ;-)

Till, who may have a bit of his own MacGyver DNA as the son of a chemist and a military officer, already has persuaded producers to let him perform a number of MacGyver's tricky stunts. He sports a band-aid on his finger from a cut suffered grabbing the side of a serving tray at the end of a complicated kick-and-catch move.

"They wanted (Lucas) to flip the serving tray and they go, 'You're not going to be able to catch it, so act like you catch it." And he starts getting so into it … he started catching it," Eads says.

His younger colleague smiles. "I enjoy the heck out of this job."

Also, the article confirms the opening gambits and the voice-overs!

I always find comments like this one to be very encouraging. He's absolutely right-- it's essential that we enjoy the characters. That should be the top priority. Sure, the action, stunts, etc are important aspects of a show like this, but if we don't like the characters, all of that other stuff is meaningless.
I said it a while ago: The success of this show will largely hinge on how much charisma Lucas Till (and the rest of the cast) has. In the original series, the plots weren't always the best, the dialogue was sometimes iffy, the budget shortages were sometimes very apparent, BUT it worked because RDA had the charisma to make it all watchable in spite of its shortcomings.

As for RDA getting a guest role on this show: It would be nice, but it's not essential for me. RDA had previously said he's glad they didn't ask him yet, because it saved him from the awkward moment of having to tell them he's not interested. I wonder if he still feels that way. I suspect it will largely depend on the role they offer him. I could see him being more enthusiastic about playing a villain, or someone completely different from MacGyver, rather than just playing Mac's dad.

Personally, I think he would be best placed as MacGyver's Dad, but perhaps RDA carries with him a huge secret, one he doesn't want his son to expose.

And the two get entangled in a web of deceit - one that culminates in a Murdoc reunion... or something to that effect.

So far, I haven't managed to find a video of the clip they showed - only spoilery descriptions in writing. I guess the official sites won't release it before they get the permission by CBS; and if someone attending the panel posted it, it has no tags that helps us finding it...

The Lucas Till / George Eads Fandom is too small or I haven't managed to find it yet; I'm used to something different with the sneaky Twilight Fandom who has the cell phone ready at every convention and splashing it all over the internet *lol*

If not, search for a proxy service you trust, change the location to USA and enter the link posted by Macgyver12186. I'm using proxfree. It seems to be trustworthy according to Web of Trust

WOW! WOW! WOW!

Loved it all... where to start...

First off - May I take the opportunity to thank jw2k for MacGyvering a solution, to the geoblocked video. macsak.gif Brilliant !

Greatly appreciated!

Ok... so, I had the pleasure to sit back and watch this, as I tucked into the cheesiest toasted cheese sandwich and hot cup of tea.

And while I enjoy eating my sandwich, It was the Panel discussion I enjoyed the most.

I can clearly see the whole Big Brother type relationship thing, between the two characters will unfold on screen. The chemistry between the two actors is infectious - they really get on well together and it's those incidental moments that were priceless. I never knew George Eads was so funny, and I look forward to seeing how this will all play out, and how they'll wind each other up (not too dissimilar to how RDA and McGill play it in the original).

It was also very nice to hear what Peter Lenkov has in mind for the show and what we are to expect. Murdoc definitely happening, and reaching out to RDA to be involved in a big way. Including more characters from the original series is also nice to know. And the Easter egg nods to the past, I find intriguing. AND the moment he spoke about trying to prove the skeptics wrong and getting them to unfold their arms...genius!

As I was listening, I'd remember back to something Kiwitek, Denizen and others had touched on, when they spoke so open and honestly, about what the original show meant to them. I reckon Lenkov or one of his team, read our posts, as I must of counted a dozen moments within that panel discussion that they addressed all those concerns, and a great big green tick would cross that concern off the list. A case in point - the ordinary everyday guy, the using his brain as his ultimate weapon, and only ever resorting to violence as a last resort.

James Wann is also very down to earth, and I can safely say that Episode 1 will be the first of many episodes directed by the great Wann (see what I did there?). Just have that feeling!

RDA said in conventions recently that he feels ready to do some acting again; especially now that his daughter moved to the other side of the country for college.

But MacGyver isn't just any project for him; and years ago when there had been talks about a reboot he couldn't really imagine why that would be a good thing. I guess he might wait to see some material from the pilot episode first or to meet the cast before agreeing for a part? It will depend very much on what part they offer him; I doubt he will show up for two minutes every episode sitting there doing nothing just for the sake of it.

Ok... so, I had the pleasure to sit back and watch this, as I tucked into the cheesiest toasted cheese sandwich and hot cup of tea.

...

It was also very nice to hear what Peter Lenkov has in mind for the show and what we are to expect. Murdoc definitely happening, and reaching out to RDA to be involved in a big way.
...

AND the moment he spoke about trying to prove the skeptics wrong and getting them to unfold their arms...genius!

Haha... I, too, was eating a grilled cheese sandwich while watching this.

I don't think they said they want RDA involved in a "big way," did they? I may have missed it, but I thought they just said they were reaching out to him, so I assumed they wanted him to be a guest star. (but considering RDA's comments about it recently, I'm not so confident it will happen, unfortunately.)

The part about getting skeptical fans to "unfold their arms" related directly to what I had posted a while ago, when I said that there will be many fans of the original series who "will fold their arms across their chests and say, 'That's not the MacGyver I grew up with, so I have no interest!!'" Nice to hear Peter addressing that concern. Let's hope he succeeds in converting those people.

I have to say that panel has made me feel much more at ease about this reboot.

I got an overwhelming sense of "Yes they get it. They understand why we're fans."

Did anyone else think George interrupting the fans question to make a joke was really rude? Felt like he didn't care and wasn't interested in her questions he just wanted to get a laugh for himself and was made worse by the fact that she was clearly a non-english speaker. There's a time and place for humor and I don't think the middle of a fans question is the place. dry.gif

Yeah. I have to admit, I'm not quite sold on George yet. I never watched CSI, so I can't comment on his acting, maybe he's great, but his personality during the various interviews I watched borders on slightly annoying at times, and I hope he's not TOO overbearing in the show. Of course, the original Jack Dalton was annoying at times, too, but there was a charm to it that I'm not quite getting yet from George. On the other hand, there is a good camaraderie between George and Lucas, and that should serve the show well.

Like you, I got a good feeling overall from the panel. Peter and James seem determined to keep the spirit of MacGyver alive in this new incarnation. It seems they genuinely like and respect the source material.

I watched the comic-con panel and I had the vibe that they never watched the show.

Peter's favorite episode was the pilot, "because mac got hurt when fighting people (this didn't happen in the pilot!)

Lucas's favorite episode was "the episode with the carnivorous ants"

James Wan said he liked the Murdoc episodes.

and George Eads gave a joke answer mad.gif

The panel host asked if Lucas Till watched the original show, and Lucas avoided answering the question.

The panel host asked if Lucas Till watched the original show, and Lucas avoided answering the question.

1.) Peter Lenkov wasn't referring to the pilot episode when he says MacGyver got hurt when fighting bad guys. He means that for the series as a whole, because mostly, Mac didn't really know how to fight and his hand would be in some sort of pain whenever he would punch someone---meaning that MacGyver is a very human character and very relatable.

2.) There's nothing wrong with Lucas referring to Trumbo's World as the episode with carnivorous ants. It doesn't mean anything, he might have just forgotten the title and Lucas has said that he only watched the show on reruns and only watched the show a lot more when he was already cast.

3.) James Wan liking Murdoc episodes doesn't mean anything. I like them too. He may just not have a very specific favorite. I don't, coz I like the whole series. I do have some episodes I do not like that much, but getting those aside would leave me with episodes that I really like and I would have a hard time to pick a 'favorite'.

4.) George Eads' joke answer was a bit wrong, I have to agree with you on that. But he recently bought the whole series box set, which shows his willingness to really know the show.

5.) Lucas may have avoided answering the 'did he watch the original show' question, because in another interview during SDCC, he has stated that he only watched the show on reruns and has recently only watched the show much more and is now much more of a fan than he is before. Also, if I remember correctly the person who asked him this gave a follow up question too quickly, so he might have answered that first and had already forgotten about the 'did you watch the original show' question.

It's safe to say that to some extent, they have watched the show because they are really willing to bring it back properly and where else would they get their easter eggs to put in the show if they never watched the original? As for the extent of how much they watched and like the show, we don't know yet. But having already watched the show is a start. smile.gif It's safe to say that the reboot is in the hands of people who, at least, respect the old show more than those who made the first reboot pilot which is now scrapped. We should just hope for the best biggrin.gif

I was generally a bit ticked off by George and Lucas trying to be funny all the time.

Maybe I'm just not used to it; having seen only Twilight or Harry Potter Panels from ComicCon. Those were always in the biggest Hall H with many more people cheering all the time; I guess they needed the cast to be a bit more serious so the audience would stay more quiet.

From what I gathered on Twitter, many people in the audicence were there because they already managed to get in, waiting for the Teen Wolf panel that followed. They weren't MacGyver fans and maybe didn't even know the people in front of them. That explains also the lack of loud applauses; maybe George and Lucas are used differently (don't know if they ever attended CSI or X-Men panels at ComicCon before) and tried the audience to react more?

We shouldn't forget that they had only one day off since they started shooting on July 10; I'm actually surprised how awake they all look *lol*. But lack of sleep can make people annoyingly funny, also.

We should also note that the dynamic between George and Lucas was very different when they were filming the unaired pilot. I guess they were trying to be funny there.

George mentioned in the roundtable interview that James Wan admonished him after doing a scene that this wasn't a comedy, and that he had to remind himself in his head that "right, not MacGruber". He tried to pass it a bit as a joke, but I think it's very possible that this happened and that it happened because they had written Eads' former character "Lincoln" as the comedic relief guy (that part probably has gone to Justin Hires now).
