Just wondering. If there were other places MacGyver should've been for an assignment or something, what are you thinking of then? Places were he hasn't been in, in the show than I mean. First countries to come immediately to mind is Japan and Australia. Maybe Iceland and Egypt as well.

Antarctica. One of those episodes where everyone is stuck on a research base and someone or something is killing people off one by one. It's been done before, but it can be done differently. As homage to all the other variations. The ones I can think of are an "X Files" episode, the film Alien Hunter and a Dean Koontz novel.

Of course, now Mac's done Antarctica (in my imagination, he has been there and solved the mystery), he has to make sure he has done all the other continents.

Japan or Hong Kong? I think the Far East would've added a whole new spin to the show!

Considering the amount of Chinese episodes, it's perhaps indeed a little weird no episode is actually set in China.

I agree! Maybe the political climate made things difficult production wise in those days.

I don't know. They had episodes set in Russia, wouldn't that have been the same? However the Tienamen Square massacre was indeed a sensitive subject. Maybe it was safer to have an episode at home rather than to have Mac go there. There is still The Golden Triangle and Second Chance for Mac visiting Asian countries. But it's indeed an interesting note.

5 minutes later:

"Oh, ***. Yet again I find myself in a dungeon, having to invent and punch my way out of it. Why are people not nice?"

A place I think they actually forgot to send Mac, was Australia. Still I imagine some kind of episode that was take place somewhere around the Outback, with special guest Paul Hogan as Crocodile Dundee ( )

Another angle on the Golden Triangle that I didn't think about until just now is that Mac was supposed to be a Vietnam War vet. Given a lot of the shows from then, like Magnum, etc., it's a wonder they didn't do a "return to Vietnam" show.

Well, in Countdown it's made clear that he and Charlie Robinson were in Vietnam as part of the bombs disposal team. But they indeed never 'went back to Vietnam.' Guess they didn't want to do the same thing as Magnum or The A-Team.

Please excuse my not knowing, but were the bomb disposal units part of the military or were they civilian contractors working for the military?

Good question, actually. I always figured Mac served his time in the military as was common in those days. Whether you like it or not, you do your time. It might be a interesting story though that considering Mac already had a thing about violence still he did his military duties as a soldier. Or maybe he was chosen for his abilities in disarming bombs. This might be an interesting discussion but I'm going to give it a seperate topic.
