Two of the highest-rated shows from last season, “Shark Tank” and “Last Man Standing,” are no longer there. (“Shark Tank” moved to Sunday, and ABC canceled “Last Man.”) That leaves CBS’ crime-show lineup of “MacGyver,” “Hawaii Five-0” and “Blue Bloods” as the top dogs.
The newcomers
There’s just one new show on the schedule: “Inhumans,” which comes to ABC for a brief, eight-episode run in the fall before making way for “Agents of SHIELD.”
Several other shows, however, are moving from other spots on the schedule: “Once Upon a Time” decamps from Sunday for ABC, “Jane the Virgin” moves from Monday nights on The CW and “Blindspot” moves from Wednesdays on NBC starting in late October.
The battle
The 8 o’clock hour will feature two shows that had success in that spot last season, “MacGyver” and “Hell’s Kitchen,” and two veterans in “Once Upon a Time” moving into the night.
“MacGyver” started strong last season and was respectable throughout, averaging just above a 1.0 in adults 18-49 after its name recognition-fueled premiere. “Hell’s Kitchen” has been around forever and performs reliably; it averaged a 1.1 last season.
“OUAT” and “Blindspot” were in that range last season as well, but on a lower-rated night they can expect to decline (“Once Upon a Time” is also doing a creative reset this season). Whether there’s room for all four to survive will be very interesting to watch.
The forecast
CBS will most likely take over the No. 1 spot in both viewers and adults 18-49 on Friday. It’s the most known quantity on the schedule and will be just fine.
FOX should be OK too. “Hell’s Kitchen” has a solid core, although whether fans stick with “The Exorcist” as it resets for Season 2 is an open question. The CW can’t expecting much more than continued critical acclaim for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” and “Jane the Virgin.”
“Blindspot” will fall some more with the move to Friday, but lowered expectations and the Third Season Rule may protect it.
Which leaves ABC. “Once Upon a Time” will take some losses with the move to Friday, but that’s to be expected. It’s tough to see “Inhumans,” a second-tier (at best) Marvel property that’s taken a beating from critics early on, breaking out in any way. But hey, at least “Agents of SHIELD” still has loyal fans.
