"James Wan will direct CBS' second attempt at the pilot episode for their MacGyver reboot series. Wan was originally slated to direct the pilot episode but had to pull out due to a scheduling conflict with post-production on his latest film, The Conjuring 2 and was replaced by David Von Ancken. In addition to directing, Wan will continue to executive produce MacGyver alongside Peter Lenkov, Craig O’Neill, Henry Winkler, MacGyver creator, Lee Zlotoff and Michael Clear head of production at Wan's Atomic Monster. After reading Jame's vision for MacGyver I'm not at all confident that he's the right person for this.

James Wan intitially suggested a certain direction the show might take (even if it was so far from the original as possible).

But as we've seen the show has gone through several re-writes since then, and Peter Lenkov (a fan of the original) has come on board project and has gone back to source material. Renaming characters and introducing us to familiar characters from the original series. He has even suggested that their would be many Easter eggs from the original series to watch out for. Something that interests me greatly.

A new script has also been written by Peter, and he will be spearheading this project. While Wan will direct the first episode, he will be confined to staying within the new boundaries of the new script. So I guess, Wan's initial or original ideas for the show will be scrapped, such were the other three drafts of the script.

It will be very interesting to see how Wan directs the first episode. I reckon it will have a good pace, lots of action, and lots and lots of secret sauce - macgyverisms. Me thinks, this project is finally going in the right direction.

You've been saying that right from the start. I'd hate to have you as my navigator.

roller.gif ah well, least I'm consistent !

From the very minute this series was muted - I have seen huge potiential. Both from a tv view point and a big feature franchise.

The numerous re-writes of the scripts (is to be expected, especially at conception stage), they had to refined and perfect the back story to make the direction for the show much bigger and boarder to carry the series franchise forward on both platforms. It just goes to show, it wasn't an easy task. Let hope their hard work pays off?

To be honest I'd prefer a continuation with a son or daughter, like they did with Hawaii Five-O. That formula is proven to work.

I really struggle to understand why they would want to take a show with icon status and remake it from scratch with a high risk of alienating the already existing fans instead of building on the already existing foundations. You don't generally tear down a perfectly good house and start over. You just renovate.

Me thinks, that is what they will do.

Already Peter Lenkov has eluded to re-constructing the character to be more like his dad, from the original.

The renaming of Lincoln to Jack Dalton, would work also because this character is supposed to be the best friend of original character.

Who knows - either way, let's believe... this is going to be great !

Yes Eads is the same age as MacGyver's father would be so it all ties in nicely for him being the original Jack Dalton.

I am hapoy with this but before people say "aren't you happy with anything" no but hear me out

Since day 1 I have been happy but also frustrated as. I swear a large portion of the "public" and even people here seem to want CBS to just re run the original 7 season in order on prime time. For me I am ok with some change and I am ok with seeing the character grow and be put in new scenarios. Of course more surprising is people seem perfectly willing for Macgyver of the original series do probably the most out of character thing period and give his son his same name which he hated. (That's like James Bond having his son join the peace core or Batman making his sun the president of the NRA it just doesn't work) right now they are leaving it vague as to wether it's s reboot or if it's a continuation and honestly they should keep it that way or I would love to see how in the hell Peter Lenkov can explain why Mac1.0 would give his son the name he hated for years... (Unless this is actually Sam's kid which even then I would find confusing)...

Anyways beyond that I feel one has to be willing to accept certain changes have to be made to keep Macgyver here in the preasent without ruining the essence of the character and honestly I feel the trailer for the original pilot did that Wan's idea (which compared to a lot of other ideas thrown around Hollywood wasn't that bad to be honest) did that and hopefully his new show does that...

Like I said I am keeping the faith and will still wait till I see the show to judge it.

Like I said I am keeping the faith and will still wait till I see the show to judge it.

Nobody ever wanted CBS to rerun the original 7 seasons again so to speak.

Nobody has ever been against anything for that matter. Skeptical? Absolutely. Why? Because of numerous failed attempts at reviving old franchises. MacGyver has a close group of faithful fans who want nothing more that for the franchise to succeed. But we also fear who's hands it falls into.

James Wan may have liked the show when he was a kid, but judging from his lack of knowing the character's bio, one has to wonder whether he is the right candidate for the job.

Peter Lenkov at least has some MacGyver knowledge (A good thing) so there is someone who knows what is going on, However he came to the party a little late. Now he has to work with what they have given him. 2 cast members that have already signed on. I don't necessarily say that Eads & Till were the worst choices. Were there better ones? A few people including you thought of a few good names to take on the mantle. smile.gif

MacGyver is old school. Most of us are too. We like the new but nowadays the new is just the old redone.

Clearly you haven't been on the IMDb forums because that is exactly what they want. I am not going to act like Till www my number one choice he wasn't (Phillip Winchester wih Snipes as Thorton .... Oh well we could still have snipes as Thorton) but the producers saw something in him I didn't and now looking at the trailer I see it. Again for me it's about expectations of a reboot I have seen comments like these

"It's not set in the 70's I thought this was a prequel"

"Why isn't the new one set in the 80's that is where Macgyver belongs"

"Why can't RDA come back he is the only true Macgyver"

Etc

And it just shocks me how people are quick to rush to judgment about a show when the very show this new who came from had a WHOLE FRIGGING EPISODE ABOUT NOT DOING THAT!!!!!!!

Sorry to scream it's just am I the only one who has seen season 5 rush to judgment. Really just me? No one else. It just baffles my mind how Macgyver taught so many lessons and yet people (no one of course on this fine forum I mean other forums) seem to forget his pivotal episode.

Nope. I get it. I really do. But let the IMDB'ers say what they say. Here, people have less of a bite regarding those sort of comments. Again, these people are old school. Its a part of their childhood or younger lives. Its iconic. Iconic franchises always have that effect.

I haven't the faintest idea of what's going on in this new reboot. The main action is on the MacGyver2016 forums. I get email after email when somebody posts in this forum, Can someone give me a rundown about the reboot and what has happened so far. Would be greatly appreciated biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Sorry for going off-topic!

I know how you feel, Macgyver12186.

The best one I have heard was on Facebook - from someone who said MacGyver is sacred. And by CBS making this reboot, they had in some way ruined his childhood.

OH, PLEASE? BOO WHOOOO. I look forward to watching that court case play out on Judge Judy.

These are the very people who have never watched an episode of MacGyver since it ended 24 years ago. They call themselves FANS, but they don't own the box set, they haven't one piece of memorabilia of the show and heck, they would barely be able to hum the theme tune.

Oh and the obsessed RDA over active retirement club as well - we can't forget them... They believe that every show needs RDA on it. They don't release that the man hasn't worked professionally (and I mean in a full-time capacity in a series) in about six years, THE MAN HAS RETIRED.

Also, RDA doesn't hold MacGyver that close to his heart. I reckon due to all his ailments that stem from his days on MacGyver, and I reckon he secretly hates the show. When asked about his time on MacGyver at conventions, he can barely recall stories from his days filming the series. And he often says that Jack O'Neill was the character that closely resembled his personality... not MacGyver.

It's impossible to go backwards in time and get RDA to continue. He wouldn't want to, even if he could.

Lucas Till deserves his moment to bring this unique character to life and create a new MacGyver for a new generation of fans.

And...the very BEST OF LUCK TO HIM ! thumbsup.gif

So wrong!!

I've interviewed RDA and I can tell you with 100% certainty that he has amazing memories and details of the show. He may not remember specific episodes or accounts of things which happened in a specific episode, but he knows all the cast and crew members involved, what was going on there, where it was done... all kinds of details.

I believe he plays on the 'I'm old and can't remember" thing because he gets sick of the same questions all the time, but if you get him in a one on one situation with new questions he has a wealth of knowledge and pride in the show. He knows it's the show which made his name and allowed him to move on to other projects and he's very proud of the messages conveyed by the show

If you listen to the interview I did he actually says that Both Mac and O'Neill resemble his personality at the time of filming. O'Neill certainly follows his personality now, but that's because he was given free range to develop and play the character as he wanted to at the time - the joys of being exec producer.

Says the man who hasn't participated in any discussions here about the old episodes/show and only turned up to discuss the new show.

What memorabilia do you have of the show?

That whole post has a particularly nasty feel to it which isn't welcome here.

Don't get me wrong the orginal show is close to my heart too and before people ask what do I have

All 7 seasons
The TV movie release
The young Macgyver pilot with a home made case and cover that sits proudly next the TV movies
The comic book (every issue)
The video game (which I beat except for two levels if I remeber correctly)

The only thing I don't have and I may update at some point
The 2008 MasterCard comercial
The 2012 car comercial
And apparently there was a string of commercials for a fast food place in Australia that I only now know about and don't have

If I can get proper download you tube material I might either make another DVD or just break/replace my Young Macgyver DVD and put it on there I haven't decided of course if I can get the 2016 pilot as well then yes I will break the original DVD and replace it so both unaired pilots and the commercials can be on one DVD (and I would include my fan trailer for Macgyver) so then in theory it would go

First 7 seasons
TV movies
Unaired pilots/comcercials/ fan trailer
Season 1 2016 reboot (and hopefully 6 more seasons as well)

And there you go do I post s lot on the older stuff no I admit that but I just love talking about new and exciting speculation I did post on here back when the various screenwriters and directors were announced and I also posted on the comic book I remeber that much...

One day I would love to sit down and discuss the lost attempts at bringing Macgyver back to the large and small screen

I am near positive there have been at least 10 previous attempts with the current one being number 11 (my mothers favorite number) but I can't seem to find any others beyond

The Jason Richter/James wan one from 2012
And
Young Macgyver 2003

Weren't the writers of the original iron man announced as doing this back in 2008? And wasn't their talks of a sequel following Dalton James as Sean Angus Macgyver (taking on his dad's name) in the mid 90's? And I seem to vaguely recall an attempt at a third TV movie with RDA at some point.... Of course there was the next Macgyver project but Lee said that was never an attempt to revitalize the character... Yeah like I said it would be interesting to see just how many there were... I know in the tabloids they linked I think Brad Pitt or someone like that to Macgyver at one point as well my memory might be fading (and. I am only 29)

I remember following this particular property a lot since 1999-2000 back when movie news and rumors were flying all over the Internet (ah the days when Clooney was definitly going to play Thomas Magnum and Hannibal Smith Jaws 5 was a sure thing and the writers of From Hell were definitly writing a new batman film with Man-bat ah the days people would im chat rooms existed and the world was simpler then) so I know there were more rumored starts to this then just those two (possibky three) Rdoyle since you seem to be in the know can you create a thread and shed some light on the potential Macgyver reboots/sequels ?

No I know I put it there as the Wan/Richter one (I am assuming James wan was going to direct the Jason "black hawk down" richter script)

The issue is even sights like coming soon only go back to articles from 2008 even though I know there were more attempts

From memory I remember there was a lot of Macgyver talk in 2002 I think when the Bourne identity premiered.

In terms of trying to bring the character back and this is just a list and a lot of guess work

1992 Macgyver ends its first run an almost imeaditly plans on a sequel start up

Dalton James is reportedly discussing a Macgyver spin off following his character Sam (though likely had it gone through the last name would be changed to Macgyver and likely most people would call him Mac) abc decided not to go through with the project inspite of a script being written
1994 2 TV movies with Richard Dean Anderson as Macgyver are produced (and honestly I love both however I feel trail to doomsday was better acted produced and written Where as lost treasure of Atlantis had better macgyverisms but the special effect and some of acting less said the better)
A third TV movie was planned but I believe either due to budgetary restraints or RDA not wanting to do it the third one never got off the ground
Fast forward to 1996 MGM had a huge hit with Goldeneye and Paramount had a huge hit with Mission impossible I believe the first bit of the idea of s film started moving toward here. Lee David Zoltoff has said in a few interviews he has been trying to get the project off the ground since the late 90's but I have no idea how far it got but with movie stalling after a while Lee Went to Henry Winkler with a plan
2000-2003 the young Macgyver era: honestly while I could be dead wrong I have a feeling that the producers were slightly Inspiried by the popular tv show Batman Beyond as the idea for that show (focusing on a younger relative of the main character where the original character was some sort of mentor) either that or James Bond jr (as literally the entire plot of that forgotten show is stolen for this) but no matter where it came from the three of them had the idea to do a sequel show of sorts retconning certain aspects (inventing a nephew that didn't exist which I remeber the Arguments and discussions of how this nephew came to be) anyways after a few script rewrite the show was set WB liked the idea and Jared Paladacki was cast as Clay Macgyver. Sadly the pilot was passed on and I think the reason being was because WB were hoping for a season 5 Macgyver dealing with teenage angst and social issues when instead they got season 1 Macgyver. The pilot got leaked in 2008 I think but for the most part remains forgotten

2005-2012 the new line years
I call these the movie years as literally New line cinema went through half a dozen scripts but since Lee had complete control of the character he turned all of them down (I am gonna gues 50% were too much a parody and the other 50% were not good enough)
The only names we know for certain were James Wan and Jason Richter but I believe the two couldn't agree in terms of scope. Casting was presumably set for fall 2013 but New line pulled the plug. Of course in terms of who I would of wanted to play Macgyver honestly Jermey Renner would of been fantastic but that is neither here nor there.
2012-2015
Lee did a few things to keep Mac in the public eye and build support for a new show specifically the citan comercial (likely RDA's last performance as Macgyver) a video game and a comic book (sadly neither sold extremly well) however the ground work for a show began as CBS met with Wan and Zoltoff about there idea for a new show...

And well here we are. I truely believe Lee wouldn't put his name on a Macgyver show if he didn't think it was good I remeber thinking he was like Kevin Mclory as a kid a sort of boogyman trying to stop Macgyver from moving forward I now think that isn't the truth at all but rather Lee is much like Albert R Broccoli or Michael G Wilson someone who knows the character and loves the character and doesn't want to just make a quick buck on the character but really create something Macgyver fans will love.

but New line pulled the plug.

Actually it was Zlotoff who pulled the plug after numerous attempts to get a decent script and constant ignoring of his feedback to them and then the last straw of losing Wan as director.

I think this might have been our first news item about the original movie announcement. laugh.gif

I thought the first trailer was alright, but on second viewing, it is a bit cheesy. I feel like if you're going to show off MacGyver doing his thing, they should show something more creative than tripping the bad guys with a water hose. Hopefully now with James Wan directing like they originally wanted, we'll get something more professional and considering his Saw roots, more technically creative.
