James Wan To Direct MacGyver Pilot

 June 17, 2016

James Wan will direct CBS' second attempt at the pilot episode for their MacGyver reboot series. Wan was originally slated to direct the pilot episode but had to pull out due to a scheduling conflict with post-production on his latest film, The Conjuring 2 and was replaced by David Von Ancken. In addition to directing, Wan will continue to executive produce MacGyver alongside Peter Lenkov, Craig O’Neill, Henry Winkler, MacGyver creator, Lee Zlotoff and Michael Clear head of production at Wan's Atomic Monster.

The show has already gone through several incarnations with the original script by written by R. Scott Gemmill (NCIS: L.A.) but picked up to pilot with new writers Paul Downs Colaizzo (CBS pilot LFE from last season) and Brett Mahoney (Code Black), however the pilot was quickly scrapped after critical reaction from fans to the trailer release with a number of cast and crew being dropped as Hawaii Five-0 showrunner Peter Lenkov was brought in to lead the project and a new script ordered leaving only lead actor Lucas Till and co-star George Eads remaining from the original pilot.

The new pilot will focus on twentysomething Angus MacGyver (Lucas Till) as he creates the DXS, a clandestine organization within the U.S. government, where he uses his unique skill set to save lives. The original pilot had him being recruted into the already existing organization. Joining his team will be maverick former CIA agent Jack Dalton (George Eads) while at home MacGyver will be entertained by his ambitious roommate, Wilt Bozer (Justin Hires), both characters MacGyver fans will recognize from the original series.
