MacGyver was a big part of my childhood and my family. We used to gather around and wait for the show to air. When I thought about it, of course, there’s this rush of nostalgia that led me to look for MacGyver-inspired movies that my whole family could enjoy just like we did back then. Of course, since we all have different lives right now, we don’t have as much time as we did to watch lengthy TV series. That’s why I’ve decided to look for movies that give off the same vibes as MacGyver.
And lo and behold, I’ve found some great movies to watch that are mostly available on major streaming services. While I can’t guarantee that it’ll give you an extremely close MacGyver experience, I can say that these movies have the same heart, smarts, wit, and cleverness. Here are some of my top picks:
Mission: Impossible Series
I wanted to start my list with the Mission: Impossible franchise because aside from the fact that it’s a Tom Cruise film, it’s filled with the kind of clever improvisation and quick problem-solving action that MacGyver fans used to love. Sure, the scale is bigger, but at the core of every mission is a team that relies on brains, gadgets, and trust in each other to get out of the so-called impossible situations.
Each film in the series features at least one scene where Ethan has to think fast, use whatever’s around him, or take the craziest risk to complete his mission. Very, I mean very MacGyver-ish if you ask me. While the tone is more intense and the content is best suited for teens and adults, this series is a fantastic watch for families with older kids.
Just make sure that when you binge-watch this movie series, your internet is fast and stable. Otherwise, it may be better to look for better internet plans. Just a piece of advice!
The A-Team (2010)
This movie is based on an ’80s TV show about former soldiers who were framed for a crime they didn’t really commit. What makes this movie feel so MacGyver-like is the way the team thinks on their feet. They don’t just charge in using guns or other weapons. They really plan, improvise, and build custom traps and tools, as well as escape routes with whatever they have available. You’ll even see a flying tank, which was super funny.
Flubber
If you and your family enjoys science, you might love this movie a little too much. It’s all about It’s about a professor named Philip Brainard who’s so focused on his experiments that he keeps forgetting important things… like his own wedding. While he was trying to create a new energy source to save his college, he accidentally invented a wild green bouncy stuff he calls Flubber.
From that point on, everything was chaos. There are basketball players bouncing off the court, a robot assistant who secretly has a crush on him, and a lot more. It’s not serious science, but it’ll definitely keep you and your kids laughing throughout the movie. It’s really silly so you and your family will really have fun watching this movie for your next TV streaming session.
Home Alone
Let’s go back to the classic Home Alone. If you haven’t watched it, well, why haven’t you?! This movie is a holiday favorite for a reason—and honestly, it’s one of the most MacGyver-esque family films out there, but in the form of an 8-year-old boy. Kevin McCallister was left behind while his family flew off for Christmas. He booby-trapped their house to stop two burglars from getting in.
And the best part about the movie? Kevin sets up the traps using household items. Yep, toy cars, hot irons, paint cans, and so many more. He thinks fast, stays calm under pressure, and uses creativity to protect his home. Sounds familiar, right? That’s classic MacGyver energy.
Final Thoughts
This is all I’ve got for now. I’m still on the hunt for more MacGyver-inspired movies, and I’ll surely update this list if I find some that are worthy to be added. For now, I hope you give these movies a try and enjoy them as much as my family and I did. Happy watching!
