Alright, listen up. If you’re someone who loved watching MacGyver growing up, you probably miss that same kind of thrill, which led you to this article. There’s no shame in admitting that because, like many people around the world, we’ve also felt the same and looked for similar TV series that can give us that same excitement and amusement. Still, MacGyver IS MacGyver. There’s no topping that, but we’re actually pumped to share that we found several TV series that have the parts we’ve loved from MacGyver — like how he uses his smarts to get out of tricky situations or turn super random objects into genius inventions.
If you’re prepping for your next TV streaming session with your friends, family, or just by yourself, we’ve got some exciting titles for you to try. Let’s start!
The Mentalist
Episodes: 151 | Seasons: 7
If you’re after MacGyver’s quick thinking and resourcefulness, you’ll likely enjoy The Mentalist as much as we did. It’s about a former con artist turned consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation. Patrick Jane solves murders using his hypnosis and cold reading skills. While it’s not directly identical to how MacGyver handles situations with duct tape and a paperclip, Patrick Jane still brings the same level of creativity using words, mind games, and people skills.
Burn Notice
Episodes: 111 | Seasons: 7
This series will remind you a lot of how MacGyver always used what he had around him to outsmart the bad guys. Burn Notice is about a spy named Michael Westen who suddenly gets cut off from his agency without having any idea why. He doesn’t have any money, backup, or identity. The show has a great cast as well so it’s really pleasant to watch. Although if you’re planning to binge-watch this series, make sure your internet is up to the task because it’s an 111-episode-long series.
White Collar
Episodes: 90 | Seasons: 6
White Collar is actually a bit like The Mentalist in some ways. Both shows center around a charming, super observant guy who helps law enforcement solve tricky cases, but not in the usual, by-the-book way. In White Collar, you’ll meet Neal Caffrey, who’s a former con artist who works with the FBI to catch other criminals. Neal may not be building gadgets out of wires and gum wrappers, but he’s always thinking a few steps ahead. It’s got brains, heart, and a touch of humor, just like what we’ve seen in MacGyver.
Deception
Episodes: 13 | Seasons: 1
Now, this one’s a bit different, but just like MacGyver, Cameron Black, a famous magician whose career crashed after a scandal, uses his smart thinking skills to help the FBI catch criminals. These so-called skills include misdirection and illusion, as magicians use them. It’s a short-lived series, but it’s a great watch. I’d definitely include this in your TV streaming lineup. You can watch it on several streaming services, including Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.
Scorpion
Episodes: 93 | Seasons: 4
If you like stories about misfits working together to save the day, you’ll love Scorpion. It’s about a team of geniuses led by Walter O’Brien, a.k.a. the guy with one of the highest IQs ever recorded. Just like MacGyver, they are all about quick thinking, science, and creative problem-solving instead of brute force. You’ll be full of questions like, how are they going to pull this off? Literally the question we’ve asked throughout the MacGyver series.
Sherlock
Episodes: 13 | Seasons: 4
Of course, we can’t miss Sherlock. While it’s mostly about investigating strange and complicated crimes, what really makes it special is, of course, the way Sherlock Holmes solves them. He’s always thinking outside of the box, and that kind of thinking-outside-the-box approach is exactly what MacGyver fans love. Sherlock is different and doesn’t always follow the rules, but it’s a part of him that makes him so so interesting to watch.
The Bottom Line
There are actually a lot of TV series that you can watch if you’re looking for that MacGyver fix. Well, it wouldn’t be entirely the same but the idea is there. We’re pretty sure that the people who love these kinds of TV shows are just on a different level, and that includes you. So we hope you enjoy these shows as much as we did!
