Ever since CBS announced that MacGyver was being pushed to a mid-season show there has been an air of confusion as fans try to piece together information – but with no official word from CBS and only small tidbits coming from others involved in the show the line between fact and fiction has become very blurred.
We have been able to gather some information however and make some educated guesses based on what we know about the current schedule and plans.
So here’s what we know so far…
When will season 4 air?
MacGyver will return in it’s usual Friday night 8pm time-slot on February 7, 2020. Leading in for Hawaii-Five-0 as it moves back to it’s 9pm slot.
Why was it moved to mid-season?
The show was moved to allow the new Magnum P.I reboot to be paired with Hawaii 5-0.
H50 used to air at 9 pm after MacGyver but was moved to MacGyver’s old 8 pm slot so Magnum can have the 9 pm slot.
Magnum’s first season didn’t do very well, ratings-wise, in it’s Monday night slot so we assume it was moved to Friday in the hope that pairing the 2 Hawaii based police action shows together will continue the Friday night ratings winning tradition.
Magnum will now be taking a hiatus break to allow H50 back into the 9pm slot leaving the 8pm slot open for MacGyver. Magnum will return once MacGyver has completed it’s season in late spring /early summer.
Season 4 will be a full 22 episode season
CBS originally ordered 13 episodes to be made for season 4. On Nov 6, 2019 CBS extended this order to a full 22 episode season.
Filming is underway right now.
Filming of season 4 started in July and was expected to wrap in November. This was extended by another 10 or so weeks when CBS changed the episode order from half to full season.

Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys) replaced Craig O’Neill as Co-Showrunner.
MacGyver’s father will be back.
A recently spotted casting call was looking for a stand-in for Tate Donovan. We don’t know any details of the capacity we will see him in, but he is definitely in at least 1 episode this season.
Levy Tran has been promoted to Series Regular.
As expected, Levy Tran was made a full cast member for this season. Her exact role, however, is uncertain due to the new cast addition of Henry Ian Cusick. We initially thought Levy would take over George Eads co-star role, however, this may now have changed.
Henry Ian Cusick has joined as the new co-lead on the show.
This news ruffled a few feathers with many fans wondering why the show needed a second male lead when it already had 2 capable female co-stars.
The new character is described as… “Russ Taylor: a wealthy Oxford-educated ex-military who is a master manipulator and salesman — skilled in propaganda and lie detection with an extremely high emotional intelligence.” and seems to be a mix of Jack Dalton and Samantha Cage.
