Fan made Bookshelf Homages and displays with themes.

I get a little obsessive about things… especially since my husband and I both retired…and to highlight how far I’ll go… we have many built-in bookcases covering many walls and of course we have hundreds of books and DVD sets filling those shelves. Not happy to just put the DVD & Book sets on the shelves… I also have to add things that tie in to the show or book series. Here are a few of them…

Starting with Mac with his trusty SAK and duct tape leaning on the complete series DVD set.

The Mac figure goes like this: you start with a GI Joe* with poseable fingers & remove his head [ouch!], a vintage Backstreet Boys’ Nike sneakers & doll head that you carve to look like Mac [I think it was a Backstreet Boys doll but I could be wrong… it’s been years since I bought those dolls for my daughters.. I know the Val Kilmer doll I carved was from a Backstreet Boys doll… that one is buried in a box in the basement somewhere]… add a Mattel Harley Davidson Ken doll’s clothes [since they’re somewhat baggy they hide the overly-muscled GI Joe doll physique…LOL], paint over the Harley logo on the while sleeveless shirt, print out a tiny version of the Challengers’ Logo and glue that over the painted area on the shirt. Then you take a small piece of metal tubing & wind a skinny piece of duct tape around it [or just forget the tubing and make it flat like Mac did]. Cut the knife out of tin & paint it to look like a SAK & glue a tiny Victorinox logo to it…and voila… you have a Mac doll. MacG.gif

*The GI Joe body works the best because the arms, wrist & fingers are poseable so he can hold things & the body is multi-positional so you can position his legs/feet to imitate the way Mac would stand.

And then my Indiana Jones homage… to include some crystal skulls.

Although I have all of the Bones Series DVDs, I also have all of Kathy Reichs’ books [started reading her Bones books before there was a TV series], so I decided to make the homage on the shelf containing her books… [and yes… that’s a real[vintage] human hand on the left on top of the books…

My younger daughter is an English Teacher [and someday a published writer I hope] and one of her favorite authors is Philip Pullman [His Dark Materials]. While studying for her Masters in Youth Literature she travelled to London and met with him [actually lunched with him and had a wonderful Q&A session with him]… so I dedicated one shelf to a photo of her with him [she seems to be gazing at him with such affection… LOL] and his books, an aethalometer and my ancient portable typewriter…

Twilight Zone homage…

It’s a lot of fun making these.. and they make good conversation pieces when we have company over
