Richard Dean Anderson: “I would like to play MacGyver again”

From 6am, in two degrees Celsius, the first fans of the Toulouse Game Show, temple of manga, video game and “geek” culture, waited yesterday in front of the Toulouse Exhibition Center. Among the headliners, “MacGyver”, Richard Dean Anderson, 66, caused the longest queues in front of his stand. With an American-style organization: €55 for a signing. For journalists, like in Cannes, it’s a 15-minute interview in a box. With a smiling, accessible MacGyver, a bit nostalgic but ready to get back to work.

What is your life like today in Malibu?

It’s hard for me to admit it, but I’ve managed to semi-retire… I have an oceanfront property and I look out at the Pacific. I have two dogs. My daughter is in college on the East Coast so I go visit her in Boston a lot. I ride my BMW 1200GS. I ride the California coast, I camp…

Would you like to get back on stage?

Yes. I would love to. I’m more ready for it now than I was before. I was busy as a father. And my daughter said to me: it’s okay dad, I agree that you go back to work. I found that touching.

Why has there never been a MacGyver movie?

I can’t say. Someone has the rights. Apparently there are talks about making a movie. A new TV series was made but it wasn’t very well received.

Who would you see to play your role?

Me! (in French, Editor’s note).

And what should the new MacGyver be like?

I would suggest that we take him as he is today: older, a little heavier, gray hair, slower… But still with the spirit of the young MacGyver. I think that would make something funny, a little different. My idea would be an older MacGyver…

What were the qualities of this hero?

He was someone who didn’t do things to be heroic. If he was, it was a result. He was someone simple, curious, educated, with a practical mind and imagination.

Is the new US President Donald Trump a hero?

F… no! (with a tight face, Ed.) I have no respect for him. He is dishonest, manipulative, self-centered… He is the worst thing that has ever happened to the United States. And I fear for my country.

Will you be visiting Toulouse this weekend?

I have been to France many times but this is my first time in Toulouse. I arrived on Thursday and had time to wander around the city.

At the Parc des Expos, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
