MacGyver Gets Season 4

CBS announced today that MacGyver will return for it’s fourth season. The announcement came on show-runner, Peter Lenkov’s birthday and included his other show, Hawaii-Five-0 to complete his trifecta of renewed shows.

The announcement is welcome news to fans who have been on tender hooks as the up-fronts cutoff date rapidly approached and will see fans go into tomorrow night’s season finale in high spirits knowing the show will return in September.

Season 3 has been a bit turbulent for both cast and crew with a major accident early in the season leaving the shows stunt coordinator in an induced coma and out of action for the rest of the year and later co-star George Eads abruptly exiting the show for personal reasons forcing show-runners to introduce a new character to maintain the team dynamic of the show.  The shows ratings, however, haven’t suffered as it consistently secured 3rd place behind other CBS shows, Blue Bloods and Hawaii-Five-0 to give CBS the winning combination Friday nights.

A fourth season makes the show eligible for the prized syndication options which the combination of iconic name and good ratings should prove lucrative for CBS making the renewal. There’s also some changes in the production side of things with 12 Monkeys‘ Terry Matalis replacing Craig O’Neill as co-show-runner alongside Peter Lenkov.

We’re also expecting Levy Tran to be promoted to the regular cast list in the new season. Tran was brought in as a recurring guest role to replace George Eads ‘Jack Dalton’ character as ‘the muscle’ on the show when Eads abruptly left the show mid-season.

Season finale airs Friday 8/7c on CBS.
