Murdoc is a renowned and infamous international assassin and mercenary that likes to tease and taunt his (potential) victims.
Not much is known about Murdoc’s past; especially because of his tendency to lie. Despite his childish persona, he seems to be highly intelligent. In Episode 2×15, Murdoc claims that he killed his own father for being abusive. Fresh out of high school, Murdoc wanted to join the United States Army. After failing the psych evaluation exam, he joined “the first army that would have him” and was sent to be trained by Nicholas Helman (Michael Des Barres). After Helman fell in love and decided to quit the business, Murdoc was sent by Helman’s former bosses to kill him, resulting in accidentally killing Helman’s wife.
Despite claiming to be a psychopath and being devoid of sympathy and empathy, Murdoc cares about his son’s well-being and seems to want to connect with MacGyver due to them both being neglected by their own fathers.
Interestingly, Murdoc is the only character in the show to acknowledge Matty Webber’s height; trying to emotionally manipulate her.
In Episode 1×08 (Corkscrew), Murdoc is presumably hired by Nikki Carpenter to kill MacGyver. Him holding the team hostage at gunpoint and shooting at Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt) results in a final showdown with MacGyver and Murdoc being arrested by the Phoenix Foundation. Murdoc states that MacGyver is the only target ever outsmarting him; leading to Murdoc being fascinated and obsessed with “Angus” (as he often calls him).
Wilt Bozer (Justin Hires) didn’t know about MacGyver’s true occupation until Murdoc showed up at their home. As a result, MacGyver convinces Thornton to hire Bozer for the Phoenix Foundation as a lab tech.
After finding out Murdoc has a son, Matty Webber (Meredith Eaton) uses Cassian (Brady Bond) as leverage in Episode 1×20 (Hole Puncher) to get Murdoc to comply and help the team.
In the Season 1 Finale Episode (1×21: Cigar Cutter), Murdoc enlists an assassin out of prison; the hired assassin posing as Dr Zito to gain entry to the Phoenix and enact revenge. Luckily, the attempt fails and Bozer survives after being attacked with a knife – but Murdoc manages to escape prison after killing a guard.
Murdoc tases, drugs and kidnaps MacGyver in Episode 2×04 (X-Ray + Penny); demanding the whereabouts of his son Cassian. MacGyver refuses to help and escapes trough the sewer tunnels. Later, Murdoc shoots Samantha Cage (Isabel Lucas) who survives because he (intentionally) just tagged her vest. He contacts the Phoenix Foundation, offering a deal to capture their mutual enemy Henry Fletcher.
After Mac, Jack and Cage have arrested Fletcher, Murdoc fires a rocket launcher at the vehicle transporting him. Murdoc rescues Fletcher and offers him to join his new collective of assassins.
In Episode 2×15 (Murdoc + Handcuffs), it’s revealed that Fletcher turned on Murdoc. Fletcher offers to hand Murdoc over to Phoenix for money. After the exchange, they’re hunted by Murdoc’s old mentor Nicholas Helman (Michael Des Barres). In the end, Murdoc saves MacGyver from being shot by Helman and demands to be allowed to visit Cassian. He manages to get Cassian out and flee; killing Fletcher while he lets Cassian wait in the car (since Cassian still doesn’t know about his father being an assassin).
In Episode 3×06 (Murdoc + MacGyver + Murdoc), Murdoc kidnaps and hides MacGyver’s girlfriend Nasha to get MacGyver to help him retrieve Cassian who has been kidnapped by an old enemy of Murdoc. As it turns out, Murdoc lied about Cassian’s mother being dead. In fact, Murdoc and Amber (Sarah Sokolovic) – a professional killer and actually involved in Cassian’s kidnapping – are still married. At the end of the episode, Murdoc spares Amber’s life; demanding that she leaves for good and never contacts Cassian again. Murdoc goes back to prison while Cassian is put with a family to take care of him.
