In order for the Phoenix Foundation to maintain their cover as a think tank, they have to produce scientific research every once in a while. Sparky is a robot with artificial intelligence, created by Angus MacGyver (Lucas Till).
Wilt Bozer (Justin Hires) doesn’t know about MacGyver’s true occupation until he is almost killed by hitman Murdoc (David Dastmalchian). MacGyver manages to convince his boss Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt) to hire Bozer for the Phoenix Foundation as a lab tech. Bozer creates masks for undercover missions and helps Mac working on robot Sparky.
In the Season 1 finale, the Phoenix Foundation is breached and infiltrated. Bozer gets stabbed by the fake Dr. Zito (Mark Sheppard), but is saved by MacGyver and Sparky. While Bozer is recuperating in the hospital, Mac and Jack Dalton (George Eads) take Sparky on a road trip while looking for MacGyver’s father James (Tate Donovan).
At the beginning of Episode 2×13 (CO2 Sensor + Tree Branch), Sparky voices concerns that he will be replaced by “Dalton’s Nightmare”, a vehicle built by Phoenix to compete in the Korman Challenge. (Sparky didn’t need to worry since the vehicle gets destroyed by the rogue drone “Bruno”.)
By Episode 3×20 (No Go + High Voltage + Rescue), Sparky is programmed to assess human emotion. He comes to the conclusion that MacGyver and Desi (Levy Tran) share a mutual attraction for each other.
After the events in the Season 3 Finale Episode 3×22 (Mason + Cable + Choices), the Phoenix Foundation was disbanded and the team members were stripped of their high-level clearances. In Episode 4×01 (Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix), Russ Taylor (Henry Ian Cusick) is revealed to be the new owner of Phoenix. Trying to save money, Russ puts Sparky up on Ebay to sell him to the highest bidder, but is later seen using him as a sounding board and “psychotherapist”.
In Episode 5×08 (SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini), Bozer mentions Sparky being on a temporary “time-out” because he had been a bit too full of himself lately. Despite seemingly being shut off, you can see Sparky’s eyes flash as Bozer turns away.
