Matty Webber

Matilda “Matty” Webber took over the position as Director of Operations for the Phoenix Foundation after Patricia Thornton (Sandrine Holt) was arrested for being a mole.

During her time at the CIA, she was the boss of Jack Dalton (George Eads) and according to him the reason why he left.

Matty Webber has a no-nonsense attitude but sees her agents as family and insists on being called by her name, not “Director” or “Ma’am”. According to Riley Davis (Tristin Mays), Matty once hung up on Russian Dictator Vladimir Putin (he called back 10 minutes later and apologized) and made the director of the NSA cry. She also wrote the entire curriculum taught at the US Clandestine Services Training Academy that Wilt Bozer (Justin Hires) is sent to in Season 2.

Season 1
After taking over as director, she interviews every member of Team Phoenix. While she warms up to Bozer immediately, she questions Angus MacGyver (Lucas Till) and his tendency to improvise in the field at first because she doesn’t want to see his luck running out.

In Episode 1×15 (Magnifying Glass), Matty changes her opinion about MacGyver after the team helps her finding the murderer of her god-daughter.

Season 2
During the season, Mac follows several clues to find his father James MacGyver (Tate Donovan). Frustratingly, the clues seem to lead him to nowhere, but MacGyver finds evidence that Matty knew his father and investigated him. Confronting Matty about it, she denies having ever met James.

After getting sober once more, Riley’s father Elwood (Billy Baldwin) tries to make amends. Matty warns him to keep it together and to not break Riley’s heart again.

In Episode 2×16 (Hammock + Balcony), Jack enlists Elwood and Matty’s personal assistant Jill Morgan (Kate Bond) to help him break into Matty‘s house and steal documents from her safe; confirming the suspicions that Matty knows James.

In the Season 2 Finale, Mac meets up with Matty to quit since he knows she’s still hiding the truth. It’s later revealed to the audience and Team Phoenix that James MacGyver is Oversight and therefore not only the head of the Phoenix Foundation, but also actually both Matty’s and MacGyver’s boss.

Season 3
In Episode 3×07 (Scavengers + Hard Drive + Dragonfly), Matty sends Team Phoenix to Ghana to retrieve a computer hard drive with sensitive information in a file named “Dragonfly”. Later, it’s revealed that Matty is married to Ethan Raines (Brandon Hines). She hasn’t seen him for 8 years because he’s an undercover CIA agent on a still ongoing “Operation Dragonfly”, investigating and infiltrating the S-Company, a criminal syndicate in South Asia.

Ethan met Matty when he was assigned to rescue her from enemy captivity. While on a mission in Costa Rica, they secretly got married; with only a few people (e.g. Jack) knowing about it. A few years ago, Ethan went off-radar, stopping all communication. When his cover is blown, she and the Phoenix team go to retrieve him in Episode 3×10 (Matty + Ethan + Fidelity); finding him living with another woman he has a child with. At the end of the episode, he decides to go into witness protection with his new family, definitely breaking it off with Matty.

In Episode 3×13 (Wilderness + Training + Survival), Matty and Jack help Ethan and his new family relocate to Nebraska under a new identity.

When his family is threatened, Ethan committs treason in Episode 3×21 (Treason + Heartbreak + Gum). While Matty and Team Phoenix manage to save his family, they can’t prevent Ethan from getting arrested and going to prison.

Season 4
After the events in the Season 3 Finale Episode 3×22 (Mason + Cable + Choices), the Phoenix Foundation was disbanded and the team members were stripped of their high-level clearances. Being blacklisted to work for another angency, Matty gives Ted Talks for a living.

In Episode 4×01 (Fire + Ashes + Legacy = Phoenix), Russ Taylor (Henry Ian Cusick) approaches MacGyver; convincing him to get Team Phoenix back together since he just bought the Phoenix Foundation.

While MacGyver didn’t have any contact with James for months, Matty contacts Oversight in Episode 4×07 (Mac + Desi + Riley + Aubrey); talking to him about her suspicions of James’ sister-in-law Gwendolyn Hayes (Jeri Ryan) still being alive.
